The Unseen Selector

For most, the observation room at the center might be a place of tension, constantly under the watchful eyes of hidden monitors. For Zoe, however, it felt more like a sanatorium, a place to unwind and recuperate. On her second day, Zoe slept until four in the afternoon. Surprisingly, the cafeteria was still open and, thankfully, empty. Without anyone to compete with, she sampled everything on offer, carrying her tray to a table where she spotted Emily with a stack of files. "Hello, Zoe," Emily greeted her with a professional smile, tinged with a hint of something Zoe couldn't quite place. Feeling a bit like a student caught in mischief, Zoe sat down, uncomfortably aware of Emily's gaze. "If you have something to say, just say it," Zoe finally broke the silence. Emily began, "Your data report is out. Your mental value is impressive, over 1200, classifying you as an S-level individual." Zoe, curious, asked about her colleague’s value for comparison. Emily explained that mental values could increase with exposure to pollutants, a revelation that made Zoe ponder the possibilities. Emily then delivered the less favorable news. Zoe's physical health was significantly compromised, an unfortunate side effect of her status as a fifth-class citizen. Zoe took this in stride, her focus drifting to more pressing concerns like the mysterious circumstances of her predecessor's death and her own inexplicable abilities. As they talked, Emily explained the complex stratification of citizens in the post-apocalyptic world, revealing the existence of a sixth-class citizen – those who had merged with pollutants, gaining abilities but also carrying the risk of losing their sanity. Zoe was intrigued by the possibility that she might fall into this category. Emily then presented Zoe with a choice: to join the Combat Division as a hunter or remain in the Cleaning Division. Both options had their perks, but Zoe’s newfound wealth from her recent mission made the decision less straightforward. As Zoe weighed her options, Emily mentioned 'Prometheus', the advanced AI responsible for the recruitment at the center. Zoe realized that her placement at the center might not have been mere chance, but a calculated decision by this unseen entity. Emily then excused herself, leaving Zoe to digest not just her meal but also the revelations about her future in this strange new world. As Zoe contemplated her options, she realized the complexity of her situation, now a pawn in a game far greater than she had imagined, overseen by an AI whose intentions and capabilities were yet unknown.
