Montclair Enterprise buzzed with activity. In just half an hour, a major conference would begin and discuss the company's most ambitious project: the biggest entertainment zone in a skyscraper. This project was led by Iris Saint Laurent, the chief architect under the reign of Miles Montclair, the former CEO and Greyson's father. But the project was shut down after the mysterious death of both Iris and Miles. Nobody knew if it was an accident or homicide, but after the funeral, Greyson and Maya silently divorced.
Maya Montclair was nowhere to be seen around the funeral, neither in her father-in-law's nor in her godmother's. Some speculations said that she was pregnant, and some said she was the reason for their deaths. However, nobody knew the truth, just that Maya was never seen in the country again.
Now the project was returned, and excitement wasn't about the project. It was about Rose. A star in the architectural world, Rose was a legend in her own right. She had designed one of the top five tallest buildings globally, with the largest entertainment zone. And now, she was leading this project.
“You would think a goddess was descending, not an architect,” Archer muttered as he slid
Fifteen minutes before the meeting, everyone was already seated, except Rose.
“Late on her first day?” Amelia snapped. “This is unprofessional.”
Greyson sipped his water, saying nothing.
“Baby,” Archer said, voice sticky with feigned affection, “She is not late because we are early. And we don't pay her for punctuality. We pay her because she is the best. Genius comes with a temper.”
“Insane,” Amelia muttered, barely holding back.
Archer gave her a sugary smile. “We could always hire Selena Lopez instead. What do you think?”
Amelia said nothing. Like hell she would agree to hiring another woman Archer had slept with.
Noah barely restrained himself. For his sister's sake, he didn't throw Archer out. But Selena Lopez? Really?
Greyson's phone buzzed. A message lit up the screen. He nodded to his assistant, who began handing out files. The meeting would begin on time.
But would Rose show up?
At exactly 9:30, the door opened. A woman in a dark business suit entered, flanked by two assistants.
“Thank you for waiting,” she said with a poised smile. “Shall we begin?”
Archer stood. “Everyone, please welcome Rose.”
The room froze.
Noah's stomach dropped. Sister-in-law? Hell no, Maya Harrington. Amelia went pale looking at the witch! No, the b***h.
And Greyson? Unmoved. He simply gestured to start the meeting and didn't utter a word the entire time.
Even afterwards, as others welcomed “Rose” to the team, Greyson offered only a nod. Then, as he left the room.
“Call Archer Prescott and Maya Montclair to my office,” he told his secretary.
“Maya Montclair?” she asked, confused.
Tom, Greyson's assistant, just shrugged. “Old habits die hard.” He patted her shoulder. “Just call Mr. Prescott and Rose.”
“Archer Prescott, what the hell are you planning?” Greyson snapped the moment Archer stepped into his office.
Outside, Maya sipped her coffee in the waiting area, dressed in a dark suit that turned heads without trying.
“Ma'am, aren't you going in?”
Maya gave a smile and pointed toward the office door. “Let them cool off first. And a tip, don't put sugar in Mr. Montclair's coffee today.”
“But… Mr. Montclair doesn't drink coffee.”
“He does when he is furious,” Maya replied sweetly. “Ask Assistant Tom if you don't trust me.”
She stood when she noticed the voices inside had softened. With a Roseful nod to the secretary, she walked to the office door. “Thanks for the coffee.”
Inside—
“Husband, you called for me?” Maya beamed as she entered.
Greyson inhaled sharply. “I have missed you today,” she went on, placing a hand on her waist. “Look at how thin I have gotten from pining for you. I thought I was going to die if I did not see you for another minute… without you, I am a fish out of water…”
His eyes involuntarily flicked to her waist. And then the memories rushed in. Damn you, Maya!
Before he could gather himself, she hopped onto his desk and leaned in, close enough for their noses to brush.
“I missed you, husband,” she whispered, eyes glassy with tears.
Greyson stood abruptly, putting distance between them. “Behave, Maya. I called for Rose, my employee, not my ex-wife.”
“But they are the same person,” she said with mock innocence. “Aren't they?”
He took a moment before replying, cold and measured, “No. Rose is an employee I'm about to fire. And Maya is someone I never intended to see again.”
“You are breaking my heart,” she whispered. He looked away. “I think I already did. So why come back for another round?”
“Why do you hate me so much?” she asked, not theatrically but with genuine ache. She didn't even know the reason he pushed her away, not truly.
“Hate? That would require me to feel something. I don't waste emotion.”
He reached for a file. “You will receive your termination letter shortly. I will double the severance. Archer can deliver it if needed. Now, close the door on your way out.”
Maya left. As soon as she did, Greyson dropped into his chair, rubbing his face. That had been harder than he thought.
'Maya, you shouldn't be here,' he thought. 'And those eyes… You can fool the world, but not me.'
The door creaked open again. This time, it was his secretary, holding a steaming cup.
“Thank you,” he muttered, taking it gratefully.
Then, he spat it across his desk, straight onto the signed termination letter.
“What the hell is this?!”
“C-Coffee, sir…”
“This isn't coffee. It's bitter poison!”
“Sir… Mrs. Montclair said—”
“THERE. IS. NO. MRS. MONTCLAIR!”
He stared at the ruined letter. This woman had been back ten minutes and was already wrecking his life.
