Chapter 17 – My Stepmother’s Love 2 * * * My head feels like it will c***k into two. Only three things could prevent my stepmother from raising her whip – when she got tired, when I stopped breathing, or when my father came to the rescue. The last option sounds the best, but what comes next is a bigger headache that I don’t want to imagine. Being saved by my own father would only trigger the never-ending wrath of my stepmother. She can’t erase in her mind the insecurities of starting as a mistress before getting promoted to a second wife. It was like a curse eating her from the inside out. “Just like your f*****g mother! You don’t know a thing about my hardship! Don’t you dare belittle me, you ingrate! ...” Nancy grabbed my nape and squeezed it so hard. I could only try to remove her hands until I heard a crashing sound followed by hot blood flowing out of my head. This b***h hit me with a vase. She is truly trying to kill me, but there is no way that I will just happily embrace my death in her arms. I have a dream and it never included dying in my stepmother’s hands. She left me with no choice. All I wanted is to disappear from this place, on my own, without any unnecessary drama, yet this woman is making it hard for all of us. Why is it so hard for her to behave like an adult? “…Argh!” With one swift move, I found myself on top of my stepmother, hitting her with all my might. I looked like a savage, unfilial child while hitting her poor parents. It was far from the truth, but it doesn’t matter now, since my life is at stake. My mind has no doubt that I will be killed tonight by this woman. I don’t have any intention of doing the same to her, since that would be a mess and I wouldn’t be able to wash my hands off. All I need is to render her motionless – without a single limb moving, black and blue. My arms started swinging at her. It doesn’t matter where it lands – her face, her wriggling arms, her sweat-soaked body. It doesn’t matter where, as long as I will be able to hit her as much as I can. I don’t need to be a time traveler just to figure out what will happen next. Even my indifferent father wouldn’t sit still should he learn that I raised my arm against that woman whom he loves the most. My days of not being hit by my own father will surely end after this day. However, regret will never be a part of my actions. This woman deserves it more than anyone else. She and her daughter shouldn’t be treated as innocent beings who just happen to have a complicated relationship with the legal child of this house. “Let’s not see each other again, Nancy. Not this life or the next one, since you are not the only person who hates the b***h that you are looking at.” Nancy was catching her breath when I separated my body from her. She is crying like a damsel in distress. Too pitiful to be called the true evil of this house. And here I am smiling like a lunatic, like a demon who has nothing but animosity in her blood. Anyone who could see us might say that I am the only one who is at fault for this shenanigan. Well, it doesn’t matter at all. They can mumble whatever they want to say and think whatever they want to think. They can create all the stories that they wanted and add all the details that should not even be a part of our little story. They can color me as the evil of this narrative. It no longer matters. I had enough. I stepped out of the room without looking back at my crying and wailing stepmother. All the people who saw my expression stepped back while keeping their mouths shut. It was as if they were seeing the epitome of darkness that shouldn’t be born in this world. That was such a sad remark. I walked past them without batting an eye. And as I travelled more distance away from the room, a maddening shriek haunted the walls of our house. My stepmother might have awakened from her current frightened state. It was faint, but I’m sure that she is cursing me with all her hatred that she has while being calmed by the maids. I did not waste any more time and went straight to my room. Getting dragged back to that place is the last wish that I have in this life. As fast as I could, I ran back to my room and grabbed my bag. I saw Pam loitering inside, but I paid her no mind. This is not the time to play the bullied sister. “Hey! Where are you going?” “Somewhere far from you!” It was the first time since before my mother’s death, the first that I was able to smile as wide as I could while talking with my stepsister. The shock that registered on Pam’s face brought delight to my heart. She must be bewildered by the sudden change in my demeanor and reaction. Well, it was to be expected, since we had never had a kind interaction before. It could only either be my angered or scared appearance. The bright smile on my lips is a foreign scene for my beloved Pam. “Are you crazy? Where the hell are you going? Tomorrow is our graduation! Sandra will be red mad if you do not attend the after-party?” I stopped running after hearing Pam’s useless concern. She has a ton to say, yet her priorities will never change. I haven’t washed the blood on my face, but my lovely sister’s area of interest will always rely on her superficial relationship with Sandra. I have long accepted this reality. However, it won’t change the fact that my own blood betrayed me to retain her standing in this rotten society. “Staying here will only turn me into a true lunatic, sister. You had better keep your life straight, Pam. You can’t always be the same old i***t that you are. Life is harsher than you thought.” A frown registered on Pam’s face before I went back to my escape. She can entertain my words with what little brain cells she has, and I won’t give a damn. “Ada! Come back here!” Those were the last words that I heard before I crossed the door of our house. There was a little breeze of fresh air when I finally tasted the first second of my freedom. It was sweet and lovely. And there is no way that I will let go of this newfound life from my hands.
