A Wolf Awakens

Chapter Two – A Wolf Awakens Lila’s golden-brown wolf pounced, colliding with the rogue in a frenzy of fur and teeth. The creature snarled, its rancid breath hot against her muzzle, but she refused to back down. Her claws raked across its flank, drawing a howl of pain. The taste of blood filled her mouth—metallic and bitter. For the first time in her life, she wasn’t just defending herself. She was fighting. The rogue snapped back viciously, catching her shoulder. Pain seared through her, but instead of weakening her, it fueled a fire deep within. Her wolf snarled in fury, sinking sharp fangs into the rogue’s neck. The creature thrashed, but she held on, her jaws locked until the beast finally whimpered and slumped against the earth. Chest heaving, Lila stepped back, blood dripping from her muzzle. The rogue twitched once, then lay still, defeated beneath the cold light of the moon. Behind her, Clara gasped. “Lila… you killed it.” Lila shifted back to human form, collapsing onto the grass. Her chest rose and fell rapidly, her body trembling from exhaustion and shock. She glanced at the lifeless body of the rogue and swallowed hard. “I didn’t mean to… I just…” Her voice cracked. “It was either him or me.” Clara knelt beside her, her expression a mixture of awe and fear. “Lila, do you realize what you’ve done? Rogues are dangerous, and you fought one alone. Most wolves need a whole patrol.” Lila hugged her knees to her chest, her mind spinning. Just hours ago, she had been humiliated in front of the pack. Now she had done something even trained warriors struggled to achieve. But she couldn’t bring herself to feel proud. All she felt was emptiness—the gaping wound of Damian’s rejection still raw in her heart. Clara touched her arm gently. “You’re stronger than you think, Lila. Maybe this… maybe this is the Moon Goddess’s way of showing you that Damian was wrong.” The words lodged in Lila’s chest. She wanted to believe them, but the memory of his cold gray eyes rejecting her burned like fire. Before she could reply, a deep voice thundered from the trees. “What in the hell happened here?” Both girls turned sharply. Alpha Damian stood at the edge of the clearing, flanked by several warriors. His presence was suffocating, his aura of dominance pressing down on them like a physical weight. His eyes narrowed as they landed on the dead rogue, then shifted to Lila—naked, bruised, and trembling. Lila scrambled to pull Clara’s shawl around her body, her cheeks burning. “It was attacking us,” Clara said quickly, stepping in front of her. “Lila fought it off.” Damian’s gaze darkened, flicking between the rogue and Lila. He said nothing for a long, tense moment. Then his voice came out like ice. “You should have run.” Lila’s jaw tightened. “If I had run, Clara would be dead.” “You disobeyed protocol,” he snapped, his tone sharp enough to slice. “Rogues are to be reported immediately. You endangered yourself and the pack by acting recklessly.” Her blood boiled. “So you’d rather I stood there and let it kill me? Or her?” A flicker of something—anger, or perhaps something else—flashed in Damian’s eyes. But it vanished quickly, replaced by that cold mask she hated. “You survived this time,” he said flatly. “Don’t expect the same next time.” He turned to his warriors. “Dispose of the body. And make sure the borders are secured. If one rogue slipped in, there may be more.” The warriors obeyed instantly, dragging the rogue’s carcass into the shadows. Clara squeezed Lila’s hand, glaring at the Alpha, but said nothing. Damian lingered for a moment longer, his gaze fixed on Lila. She felt it like a weight pressing into her soul. Then he turned sharply and walked away, leaving her trembling in the grass. Clara let out a frustrated growl. “He’s unbelievable. You saved my life, Lila. You killed a rogue. And he still treats you like you’re nothing.” Lila’s throat tightened. “That’s because, to him, I am nothing.” “No,” Clara said fiercely. “He just doesn’t see it yet. But one day, he will.” Lila didn’t answer. She pulled the shawl tighter, staring at the trees where Damian had vanished. Deep down, she wondered if Clara was right—or if the Alpha’s rejection would haunt her forever. The Next Morning The sun rose over Crescent Moon Pack, painting the houses and training fields in soft gold. Life went on as if nothing had happened, though whispers followed Lila everywhere she went. She caught fragments as she passed. “Did you hear? The Alpha rejected her.” “Poor thing. Imagine being unwanted by your own mate.” “She killed a rogue, though. Maybe she’s not as weak as we thought.” Their voices stung, but she kept her head high. If she broke down now, she would give them exactly what they wanted. When she reached her small cabin on the edge of the territory, she found her mother waiting on the porch. Marianne Hart’s once-bright eyes had dulled from years of hardship, but they softened when they landed on her daughter. “Lila,” she whispered, opening her arms. Lila broke. She collapsed into her mother’s embrace, sobs wracking her chest. For the first time since last night, she allowed herself to fall apart. Her mother stroked her hair gently. “I know, sweetheart. I know.” “He rejected me,” Lila choked out. “Right in front of everyone. He looked at me like I was… worthless.” Marianne’s arms tightened. “You are not worthless. You are stronger than you realize. Damian’s blindness does not define your worth.” Lila pressed her face into her mother’s shoulder, letting the tears flow until exhaustion stole her voice. When she finally pulled away, Marianne cupped her face. “You have a choice now, Lila. You can let his rejection destroy you… or you can rise above it. Which will you choose?” Lila wiped her eyes, her chest aching. “I don’t know if I can.” “You can,” her mother said firmly. “Because you must.” The determination in her mother’s voice sparked something faint but burning within Lila’s chest. Maybe she wasn’t ready to fight back yet. Maybe she still needed time to heal. But deep down, she knew her mother was right. This wasn’t the end. It was only the beginning.
