Whispers of Strength

Chapter Three – Whispers of Strength The following days were a blur of whispers, stares, and cruel laughter that followed Lila everywhere she went. The pack was merciless in its gossip, feeding on her humiliation like vultures. Whenever she entered the communal hall, voices hushed for only a moment before rising again with mocking tones. “She thought the Alpha would want her?” “Rejected in front of everyone—what shame.” “Even if she killed a rogue, she’ll always be the weak girl with a dead father.” Every word pierced her, but she refused to let them see her bleed. She walked with her head high, her back straight, even as her insides screamed. Clara stayed by her side like a loyal shadow, snapping back at anyone bold enough to insult her outright. “Say it again, and I’ll break your nose,” Clara snarled at one warrior, earning herself a warning from the Beta. Lila was grateful, but she hated that Clara had to defend her. She wanted to be strong enough to silence them herself. The Training Grounds On the fourth morning after the rejection, Lila made a decision. If the Alpha thought she was weak, if the pack thought she was worthless—then she would change that. She went to the training grounds. The field was already alive with activity. Warriors sparred in pairs, their wolves’ growls echoing as claws met claws. The clang of weapons rang in the distance where a group practiced with blades. When Lila stepped onto the field, heads turned. Conversations died. Snickers spread like wildfire. “What’s she doing here?” “She doesn’t belong.” “She’ll get herself killed before she learns anything.” Lila ignored them and walked straight to the Beta. Marcus was a large, scarred wolf with a permanent frown etched into his face. He raised an eyebrow as she approached. “What do you want, girl?” His tone was flat, but his eyes were calculating. “I want to train,” Lila said, forcing her voice not to shake. A ripple of laughter passed through the warriors behind her. “Train? With us?” “She can’t be serious.” “The Alpha’s reject thinks she can fight!” Marcus folded his arms, studying her. “Why?” Lila clenched her fists. “Because I won’t be weak anymore. I won’t be useless. If rogues are breaching our borders, I want to be able to defend this pack.” The Beta tilted his head, silent for a long moment. Then, surprisingly, he gave a short nod. “Fine. But don’t expect special treatment. If you fail, you fail.” The laughter around her faltered into whispers. Lila straightened her shoulders. “I don’t want special treatment. I just want a chance.” First Blood Her chance came faster than she expected. One of the warriors—a tall brute named Kane—stepped forward with a cruel smirk. “I’ll spar with her. Let’s see what the little reject is made of.” The others chuckled, clearly expecting a spectacle. Marcus gestured to the circle. “Fine. But keep it clean.” Lila’s heart pounded as she stepped into the ring, facing Kane. He towered over her, muscles rippling, his grin taunting. “Don’t worry,” he said mockingly. “I’ll go easy on you.” Her jaw tightened. “Don’t.” At Marcus’s signal, Kane lunged. Lila barely dodged, the wind of his fist brushing past her cheek. The crowd jeered. She stumbled but caught herself, forcing her breathing to steady. Focus, Lila. You survived a rogue. You can do this. When Kane came at her again, she ducked low and slammed her elbow into his ribs. He grunted, surprised, but recovered quickly, sweeping her legs out from under her. She hit the ground hard, pain jolting through her back. The crowd erupted in laughter. “Pathetic!” someone shouted. Kane loomed over her, smirking. “Stay down before you embarrass yourself further.” But something in Lila snapped. “No,” she growled, her wolf stirring within. She rolled to her feet and launched herself at him with unexpected ferocity. Her fist connected with his jaw, sending his head snapping back. The laughter stopped. Kane snarled, furious now. He came at her harder, but she met him blow for blow, driven by raw determination. When he swung, she ducked. When he lunged, she twisted aside. And finally—when he left his side open—she struck with all her strength, her fist slamming into his ribs. Kane staggered, wheezing. Silence fell over the field. Marcus raised a hand. “Enough.” Kane scowled but stepped back, rubbing his side. His smirk was gone. Lila stood in the center of the ring, chest heaving, sweat dripping down her face—but she was still standing. Whispers rippled through the crowd. “She lasted longer than I thought…” “She actually hit him!” “Maybe she’s not as weak as we believed.” For the first time since the rejection, Lila felt a flicker of pride. Marcus gave her a curt nod. “Report back tomorrow morning. Training begins at dawn.” Her heart leapt. “Yes, Beta.” As she left the field, she caught sight of Damian standing at a distance, watching silently. His gray eyes were unreadable, but she felt their weight on her. Her stomach twisted. She couldn’t tell if he was angry, curious, or something else entirely. But one thing was certain—he had seen her fight. And for the first time, she wondered if the Alpha who had rejected her might be beginning to doubt his choice.
