CHAPTER 4- The First Spark

Chapter 4 — The First Spark I chose the restaurant carefully. Dim lighting. Expensive enough to impress. Intimate enough to observe. Marcus liked places that made him feel powerful. Vanessa liked places that made her feel desired. Perfect. Marcus Hale Vanessa Reed I arrived first. Control starts with positioning. I chose my seat strategically — across from Marcus. Vanessa would sit beside him. Not accidental. Intentional. Marcus walked in five minutes later, confident as always. Navy blazer. Watch slightly too flashy for his income bracket. He kissed my cheek. “You look beautiful.” “I know,” I said with a soft smile. Confidence unsettles men more than insecurity. Then Vanessa arrived. Black dress. Red lips. Calculated elegance. She looked stunning. And Marcus noticed. Of course he did. The shift was almost microscopic — a half-second pause as his eyes traveled over her body before returning to my face. But I saw it. Because I was looking for it. “Vanessa,” he greeted smoothly. “Marcus,” she replied, voice warm. Too warm. We sat. Wine was poured. Conversation flowed. At first, it was easy. Light. Safe. Vanessa laughed at his jokes. Marcus leaned slightly closer when she spoke. Their knees brushed once under the table. She didn’t move away. Neither did he. In my first life, I would’ve missed it. Tonight? I cataloged everything. Marcus began talking about his “future business venture.” He always loved an audience. “I just need the right investor,” he said casually, glancing at me. Vanessa tilted her head. “What kind of investment?” Financial curiosity. Masked as interest. He explained. Exaggerated numbers. Projected success. Vanessa’s eyes didn’t leave him. Not admiration. Assessment. The same look he once gave me. Two predators recognizing each other. Fascinating. I reached for my wine slowly. “Marcus has big dreams,” I said gently. “I believe in him.” His hand covered mine immediately. Possessive. Performative. Vanessa’s smile tightened for a fraction of a second. There it is. Jealousy. The first spark. And I fed it. “You know,” I added lightly, “Vanessa works in marketing. She understands strategy. Maybe she could help you sometime.” Marcus looked intrigued. Vanessa looked pleased. Hook set. The rest of dinner became more animated. Inside jokes forming too quickly. Shared opinions. Mirrored body language. Humans lean toward what attracts them. By dessert, their energy had shifted. Subtle. But electric. At one point, Vanessa excused herself to the restroom. Marcus watched her walk away. He didn’t mean to. But he did. And when he realized I was watching him? He smiled innocently. “She seems nice.” “She is,” I replied calmly. I wondered if he remembered calling her that at my funeral. Outside, the night air was cool. Marcus wrapped an arm around my waist. Vanessa walked on his other side. A perfect picture. If anyone saw us, they’d think we were unbreakable. Marcus stepped ahead briefly to take a phone call. Leaving us alone. Vanessa looked at me thoughtfully. “He’s charming.” I met her gaze evenly. “Yes. He is.” She hesitated. “You’re lucky.” I smiled softly. “Am I?” Something flickered in her eyes. Curiosity. Challenge. Possibility. Marcus returned moments later. We said our goodbyes. Vanessa hugged me tightly. “Let’s do this again soon.” “Oh, we will,” I promised. Marcus kissed me before getting into his car. As I watched them drive away separately… I exhaled slowly. Phase one was complete. Attraction acknowledged. Interest sparked. Ego engaged. They didn’t even realize they had stepped onto a chessboard. But I did. And tonight, I moved the first real piece. Back in my apartment, I opened my laptop. Started a private document. Date. Time. Observations. This time, nothing would rely on memory alone. Evidence wins wars. I leaned back in my chair, thinking about the way they had looked at each other. The hunger. The curiosity. Five years ago, that spark grew into an affair. This time? I would control how it burned. Because temptation isn’t dangerous. Opportunity is. And I was about to give them plenty.
