CHAPTER 10 - WHAT SLIPPED

1039 Words
Chapter 10 — What Slipped It wasn’t planned. That’s what Vanessa would tell anyone. That running into Marcus Hale that night was coincidence. That the conversation just… happened. That she didn’t mean to say anything. But Vanessa Reed never did anything without intention. Vanessa Reed — Marcus wasn’t expecting company. He had just gotten home. Jacket off. Tie loosened. Mind still unsettled from the past few days. From Elena. From the distance. From the way things felt like they were slipping just out of his control. The knock on the door came just after ten. Sharp. Unexpected. He frowned slightly as he walked over and opened it. “Vanessa?” She stood there like she belonged. Red dress replaced with something softer now — but still striking. Hair slightly undone. Makeup faded just enough to look effortless. “I was in the area,” she said lightly. “Thought I’d check on you.” Concern. Warm. Convincing. Marcus hesitated. Then stepped aside. “Come in.” — His apartment was quiet. Too quiet. Vanessa noticed immediately. No Elena. Of course. She walked in slowly, taking everything in. “You live alone?” she asked casually. “Yeah.” “And she doesn’t stay over?” The question was soft. Almost careless. Marcus poured himself a drink. “Not lately.” There it is. Distance confirmed. Vanessa leaned lightly against the counter. “I figured you might want company.” He glanced at her. “Why?” She shrugged. “You didn’t seem okay the last time I saw you.” At the office. At the tension. At the shift. Marcus exhaled slowly. “I’m fine.” Lie. Vanessa didn’t call it out. She just stepped closer. Not too much. Just enough. “You don’t have to pretend with me,” she said quietly. That line… Always works. Marcus looked at her more carefully now. “You barely know me.” She smiled faintly. “I know enough.” Silence stretched. Not awkward. Just… opening. “What do you know?” he asked. “That you’re not used to being ignored.” Direct. Marcus’s jaw tightened. “I’m not being ignored.” Vanessa tilted her head. “No?” A pause. Then softer: “Then why did it look like she didn’t even think twice about leaving tonight?” There it is. The slip. The “accident.” Marcus stilled. “What do you mean?” Vanessa froze slightly. Just enough to look like she realized she said too much. Nothing dramatic. Just… hesitation. “Nothing,” she said quickly. “Forget I said that.” Now he was focused. “What do you mean, Vanessa?” She shook her head. “It’s not my place.” Perfect. Now he *needs* to know. “Say it.” A beat. She sighed softly. “I just— I saw her tonight.” There it is. The reveal. But gentle. Controlled. Marcus frowned. “Where?” “At an event,” she said. “Nothing important.” Lie. It was very important. “And?” Vanessa looked away slightly. Like she was debating. Like she didn’t want to hurt him. “They were just… talking.” Marcus’s expression darkened. “Who?” She hesitated. Then: “Lucien.” Silence. Heavy. Immediate. Marcus’s grip tightened around his glass. “They work together,” he said. Defensive. Predictable. “I know,” Vanessa replied softly. “And it was probably nothing.” Probably. The most dangerous word. “But…” she added, trailing off. Marcus stepped closer. “But what?” Vanessa met his eyes. “I’ve seen men like him before.” Careful. Measured. “And?” “They don’t invest attention without reason.” That landed. Hard. Marcus didn’t speak. So she stepped back. Creating space. “I shouldn’t have said anything,” she murmured. “It’s just… I’d want someone to tell me.” There it is. The justification. Concern. Loyalty. Care. All wrapped around manipulation. Marcus ran a hand through his hair. “They were just talking,” he repeated. But this time? It sounded weaker. Vanessa watched him carefully. Then softened her tone. “She looked… different.” That word again. Different. “How?” he asked. “Confident,” she said. A beat. “Like she didn’t need anyone.” That one? Cut deep. Marcus exhaled slowly. Looking away. Thinking. Questioning. Exactly where Vanessa wanted him. “I’m sure it’s nothing,” she added quickly. “I’m probably overthinking.” No, you’re not. But now *he* will. “I just didn’t want you to be the only one who didn’t see it,” she finished quietly. And there it was. The final push. Not an accusation. Not a warning. Just… a seed. — Silence filled the apartment. Marcus didn’t look at her. Didn’t speak. He was thinking. Replaying. Questioning. Vanessa let him. She didn’t interrupt. Didn’t push. Because she didn’t need to anymore. The damage was already done. — After a while, she stepped toward the door. “I should go.” Marcus finally looked up. “You didn’t have to come.” She smiled softly. “I know.” A pause. “But I wanted to.” That lingered. She opened the door. Then stopped. Turned slightly. “Just… don’t ignore what you feel,” she said gently. “And don’t let someone make you feel like you’re replaceable.” And then she left. — Marcus stood there alone. Drink untouched. Mind racing. He told himself it was nothing. Work. Conversation. Professional. But something about the way Vanessa said it… The way she hesitated. The way it “slipped” out… It felt real. Too real. And for the first time… A thought crept in. Unwanted. Unfamiliar. Dangerous. *What if Elena is pulling away?* — Across the city, Elena Hart sat quietly. Calm. Focused. Certain. She didn’t need to be there. Didn’t need to hear the conversation. Because she knew Vanessa. And she knew Marcus. And she knew exactly what would happen when the two of them were left alone with doubt. Her lips curved slightly. Cold. Precise. Because this time… She didn’t break when they betrayed her. She built the moment that would lead them there.
