Chapter 8: Shadows of Doubt

1098 Words
Lyra's POV The silver glow haunted me, no matter how many times I washed my hands that evening, scrubbing until my skin turned raw, I couldn't forget the faint light that had appeared beneath my palms, it had lasted only a heartbeat but I knew what I had seen, something inside me had changed, something I didn't understand and something I wasn't sure I was ready for. I sat outside the healer’s but separating moonleaf from its stems while Martha prepared medicine inside. “You're unusually quiet today” she observed without looking up I forced a smile, “I'm just tired” She hummed thoughtfully but didn't press the matter. I was grateful for that. How could I possibly explain what had happened at the Moon Shrine, the voice that had spoken to me out of the light of the wolf that called itself Astra? Or that I had somehow known where to find an injured warrior before anyone else? I barely understood it myself. A sudden commotion outside drew our attention. “The Alpha is coming!” Several children ran past the hut laughing as they chased one another toward the village square. Curious, I stepped outside. Kael had returned from inspecting the eastern border, Damon walked beside him discussing something in hushed tones while several patrol captains followed behind them, mud still clinging to their boots from a long day in the woods. Their expressions were grim, I didn't need to hear the conversation to know the news wasn't good. “The rogue footprints didn't disappear” Damon said as they passed, “They split into three groups” Kael's jaw tightened, “They're testing our defenses” “And they'll keep testing them until they find a weakness” Before they could continue, an elderly woman approached Kael carrying a basket of fresh bread. “Alpha” she said warmly offering it to him, “you've given us hope again” Kael accepted it with a grateful smile, “The pack gave me hope first” The woman bowed before walking away. I watched the exchange quietly the same way I always did, I just wanted to witness it. I don't want to be noticed. This was the Kael I had always believed in, strong and kind. The kind of Alpha Silver Crest deserved. Almost as if he sensed my gaze, Kael looked in my direction, our eyes met, he started walking slowly just enough that Damon nearly walked into him. That strange feeling returned, his wolf stirred I easily beneath the surface. There she is, the thought came so naturally that he almost spoke it aloud. Instead, he frowned. Why did that feeling only happen when Lyra was nearby? It made no sense, she was an orphan, a healer's assistant, someone he'd known his whole life without ever once feeling this pull, yet here it was again. Before he could understand it, Selena appeared at his side carrying several scrolls. “The council is waiting,” she reminded him gently. Kael blinked as though waking from a dream, “Of course” He gave me a small nod before following her toward the Alpha House, though his steps felt heavier than they had a moment ago for reasons he couldn't understand. I lowered my eyes, I didn't notice Selena glancing back, her smile remained gentle but behind her calm expression questions had begun to form, the kind that take root slowly and never quite let go once they do. That evening, I returned to the forest not because anyone had asked me to because I needed answers and the shrine was the only place that might have the. The deeper I walked, the quieter the world became though I knew now that quiet no longer meant empty. Eventually, I reached the Moon Shrine, the Silver light was gone, the ancient altar looked the same, cracked stone and creeping moss, nothing to suggest that a goddess had slime here only a day before. For a moment, I wondered if the previous night had only been a dream. I stepped closer but nothing happened, I let out a slow breath, “So…now what? Silence gave me a response, a butter laugh escaped my lips, “I don't even know why I came” Just as I turned to leave, I felt a cool breeze against my cheek, the leaves above me rustled not violently, almost as though they were whispering. I closed my eyes, a faint sound drifted through my mind, not words, only a distant howl, it was softer than before. When I opened my eyes, the sound disappeared, I frowned “I know you're there” I got no answer yet somehow I no longer felt alone, it was mine now whether I understood it or not. Far beyond Silver Crest's borders inside the ruins of an abandoned temple where broken pillars leaned against each other like old men too tired to stand alone. Several others stood in silence behind him, their faces hidden, their patience worn thin by years of waiting. “The sign has appeared,” the hooded man said. “The White Wolf has awakened” One of the figures stepped forward, “Are you sure?” “I felt it” He slowly lifted his head, “The Moon Goddess's blessing has returned” The room felt silent, another voice broke the stillness, “The we must find her before the other packs do” The hooded man shook his head, “No, We must find her before Malachar does” At the mention of the Dark Alpha's name, the air itself seemed to grow colder as though the temple’s very stones remembered what that name meant. “If he reaches the White Wolf first, he won't kill her” He paused, “He'll use her” The warning lingered in the room long after the words were spoken. Back in Silver Crest, I stood beneath the moonlight unaware of the danger already moving toward me, unaware of the name that was mentioned miles away. I wrapped my cloak tighter around myself, the night air cool against my skin in a way that no longer felt entry unfamiliar, “I have no idea what I'm supposed to become,” I whispered. The wind stirred once more, this time for just a heartbeat a second heartbeat answered mine from somewhere deep within, then it disappeared. I placed a hand over my chest, a small smile was on my lips. “Maybe I won't have to figure it out alone”
