~ Judy ~
The question lingers in my mind.
All these years, I have carried the burden of this bond alone.
I have wanted him. Always.
Maybe it's time to finally tell him.
“Kieran, there is… there is something you should know.” I stutter.
“What?” He asks softly.
But before I can respond, the door suddenly bursts open and Eliza storms in, her face twisted in rage.
“You b***h!” she screams, her gaze darting between my flushed face and Kieran's disheveled clothes.
Without a second of hesitation, she lunges at me.
But Kieran is faster.
He quickly steps between us, acting as an impenetrable wall of muscle for my protection. “Eliza—”
“I knew it Judy! You have always wanted him!” she yells again, her golden eyes flashing with more anger as she shifts partially, her sharp claws extending from her manicured fingers.
The air in the room suddenly feels suffocating, and when she suddenly sniffs, I know exactly what she smells.
I can smell it too. The scent of cedarwood, black coffee, and sin is clinging to my skin.
All Kieran's scent.
Instantly, she snaps her eyes to Kieran. “What the f**k?”
“Step back Eliza,” Kieran commands, the deep tone of his Alpha aura bleeding into his voice.
But Eliza fights it. “Step back?! She is an exiled traitor! She tried to seduce you two years ago and now she is back and she is doing it again! She wants to illegally rule this pack with you!”
“I didn't do anything back then and you know it!” I snap back, finally tired of all this s**t.
“How dare you talk back at me?!” She snarls and turns to Kieran, pointing a trembling, clawed finger at me. “Kieran, do you see how she is talking back at me? I told you she is disrespectful and nothing but a gold-digging scum—”
“I am not a gold-digging scum!” I blast back. “You are! You spun a web of lies to steal a life that wasn't yours!”
She flinches, a flash of fear zapping through her face before her rage masks it again. I am no longer the broken, weak omega she bullied in the past. Two years of scraping by in the human world have hardened my spine.
“Kieran, throw her out!” She demands. “She is delusional and the elders just warned us about dark magic and curses. What if she is cursed? What if she is the reason my parents are dead?!”
“You're crazy!” I lash back. “I have been away for two f*****g years and you're trying to label me a murderer when I haven't even spent up to twenty four hours here?!”
“You bring nothing but destruction!” She yells back and turns to Kieran. “Kieran, listen to me. Throw her out right now!”
“I won't.” Kieran refuses and stands his ground defensively in front of me, looking at Eliza with those piercing green eyes that are so cold and angry right now.
Eliza suddenly looks lost. “What?”
“I said I won't. The elders mentioned there is going to be an investigation and until I understand exactly what is going on, no one is being thrown out.”
“She is an exile!” Eliza shrieks. “She shouldn't even be in this building! Have you forgotten she was banished for treason?!”
“I haven't forgotten anything,” Kieran says, his voice dropping to a dangerously soft volume. Next, he turns his head slightly, his gaze catching mine over his shoulder.
The intensity in his eyes makes my breath hitch.
That's it. I should really get out of here right now before things blow out of proportion.
“I'm leaving,” I declare, grabbing my leather jacket from the floor where Kieran had discarded it earlier. My hands are shaking, but I refuse to let Eliza see me sweat.
Quickly, I brush past Kieran, my arm accidentally grazing his skin. The touch instantly has sparks of the mate bond spreading through my body and shooting straight to my core.
“Judy stop,” he orders.
“No Alpha,” I say, throwing the title at him like a weapon. “Your Luna is clearly upset and I have a mystery to solve about my inheritance, including the fact that she said I am cursed.”
I turn away quickly to avoid being held back any longer. As I walk towards the doors, I catch a glimpse of Eliza's reflection in the glass wall.
She is glaring at me, her eyes burning through my body like she is dying to strangle me to death.
Also, she looks like she is scared, as if I am an unwanted ghost who just dug myself out of the grave.
Ever since we were little, she has always harbored this inexplicable grudge against me like I am a dark shadow she can't escape. We grew up together under the same roof, but even then, Eliza always sabotaged me by stealing my toys, ruining my dresses, and even spreading rumors that I am “cursed” because strange things happened around me like animals avoiding my touch.
She even gossiped further that my mother was a rogue who mingled with witches and dabbled in forbidden spells, including that my mother even cursed anyone who crossed her.
Back then, I ignored all those things and chalked it up to jealousy, afterall Eliza was the golden child while I was just regarded as the invincible omega.
But now, after two years of grinding my ass in the human world and coming back here, I wonder if there is truth buried in those rumors. Also, whatever dark magic that Elder Thaddeus mentioned, including the strange illness that took my foster parents, I am starting to realize it isn't all a coincidence.
In addition, I also suspect it might be tied to why Kieran never felt our bond that fateful day two years ago.
Finally, I step out of the conference room and into the empty hallway, banging the doors shut behind me. Just then, I also recall that Eliza always positions herself close to power. She even befriended Kieran long before I found out that Kieran was my fated mate.
Honestly, everything that is happening right now doesn't feel ordinary.
I need to find out the truth about my mother.
I need to know why Eliza looked like she was scared of me.
Also, I need to figure out how to survive being close to Kieran without letting him completely consume my soul.
