THE ARRIVAL

The farm truck rattled down the gravel driveway, kicking up dust that swirled around Jade's ankles. She slammed the door shut, her face a mask of annoyance. "This is ridiculous," she muttered, staring at the sprawling fields of corn that stretched as far as the eye could see. She couldn't believe her mother had actually sent her here, to this dusty, backwater farm. Her cousin, Alexa, who was also being sent to the farm for similar reasons, leaned against the truck, her arms crossed. "I can't believe we're actually here," she said, her voice laced with sarcasm. "This is worse than detention." Jade glared at her. "Don't even try to act like you're not enjoying this," she said, her voice dripping with disdain. "You're probably thrilled to be away from our mother's watchful eye." Alexa rolled her eyes. "Yeah, right. I'd rather be at home, sipping champagne and shopping for designer clothes." A woman with kind eyes and a warm smile emerged from the farmhouse. "Welcome to Willow Creek Farm, girls," she said, her voice as gentle as the summer breeze. "I'm Mrs. Garcia, and I'll be taking care of you while you're here." Jade barely acknowledged her. "Just get us settled in," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "We're not staying long." Mrs. Garcia's smile didn't waver. "Of course, dear. I'll show you to your rooms." As they walked towards the farmhouse, two young men emerged from the barn, their hands covered in dirt. One had dark hair and eyes that sparkled like the sun reflecting off a lake. He gave Jade and Alexa a confident grin. "Hi, I'm Gabrielle," he said. "I'll be showing you around." The other, taller and with a more reserved demeanor, simply nodded. "Aron," he said. "Nice to meet you." Jade and Alexa exchanged a look. "Great," Jade said, her voice dripping with disdain. "Another person to annoy." Gabrielle chuckled, his eyes twinkling. "Don't worry, we're used to it. This farm's got a way of humbling people." Aron simply shrugged. He exchanged a look with Mrs. Garcia, and something in their expressions sent a shiver down Jade's spine. She had a feeling this was going to be a long, uncomfortable summer.
