Chapter 2: Broken Threads

CRACK. It didn't sound like a noise in the physical world; it sounded like her very soul snapping in two. A wave of blinding, agonizing heat surged through Vespera’s chest as the invisible thread linking her to Kaelen was violently ripped apart. She collapsed to her knees on the jagged stone altar, clutching her chest as a choked, ragged scream tore from her throat. The physical pain of a broken mate bond was suffocating—like having a hot blade plunged into your sternum and twisted. But the emotional agony was infinitely worse. Kaelen didn't even flinch. He didn't offer a hand, nor did he look back. He turned his heel and walked away from her kneeling form, stepping directly toward Seraphina. Vespera watched through a blur of tears as her sister stepped forward with a soft, comforting smile. Seraphina placed a delicate hand on Kaelen’s broad chest, whispering something in his ear. Kaelen reached down, taking Seraphina's hand in his own, accepting her comfort before the entire pack. The message was crystal clear: The defect is discarded. The golden daughter takes her place. "Get up," a harsh voice barked above her. Vespera looked up, gasping for air. Her father, Thomas, was standing over her. There was no pity in his face—only a raw, burning embarrassment. "Father..." Vespera whimpered, reaching for his pant leg. "Father, help me..." Thomas stepped back, kicking her hand away. "Do not call me that. You have brought shame upon the Thorne family for eighteen years. We tolerated your quietness hoping you would prove yourself tonight. But you are nothing. A hollow shell." "Thomas, please," Vespera’s mother whispered behind him, though she kept her distance. "She's still—" "She is a defect, Martha!" Thomas snarled, shutting his wife down instantly. He turned back to Vespera, his eyes dark. "You have no place in this house. You have no place in this pack." Alpha Marcus stepped up beside Thomas, looking down at Vespera like she was a stain on his clean stone courtyard. "By the laws of the Ironfang," Alpha Marcus announced, "a pack member who cannot shift by their eighteenth moon is stripped of their title, their rank, and their protection. Vespera Thorne, you are hereby banished from Ironfang territory." A collective murmur washed over the crowd, but nobody objected. Not a single person stepped forward to defend her. "You have until midnight to gather your belongings and cross the northern border," Marcus continued coldly. "If you are found on Ironfang land after midnight, you will be hunted down and slaughtered as a rogue intruder." Vespera lay on the stone, her chest heaving, her broken heart spilling out into the cold night. She looked up at the full moon, waiting for some sign of comfort from the deity everyone worshipped. Nothing came. Only the howling wind. Slowly, using every ounce of pride she had left, Vespera forced herself to her feet. She wiped the blood from her bitten lip and the tears from her bruised cheeks with the back of her trembling hand. She didn't look at Kaelen, who was still holding Seraphina's hand. She didn't look at her parents. With her head held as high as her shattered body would allow, Vespera turned her back on her pack and walked away into the dark, whispering shadows of the forest.
