The forest outside the Ironfang borders was known as the Howling Mire—a swampy, fog-drenched wasteland where no pack claimed territory. It was a place for outcasts, dead trees, and rotting hopes.
By midnight, Vespera’s ceremonial white dress was ruined. The hem was shredded by sharp brambles, black mud caked her ankles, and fresh scratches bled along her forearms.
She had no coat. No food. No weapon. Just the thin fabric on her back and the excruciating phantom ache in her chest where her mate bond used to be.
A defect. A hollow she-wolf.
Her father’s words echoed in time with her ragged footsteps. Her lungs burned from the freezing air, but she couldn't stop walking. If she stopped, the cold would settle into her bones, and she knew she wouldn't have the strength to stand back up.
"Why?" Vespera sobbed into the quiet woods, stumbling over a exposed tree root and crashing hard into the damp moss.
She didn't bother getting up. She lay there in the mud, staring up through the thick canopy at the blood-red moon peeking through the clouds.
"What did I do wrong?" she wept, her voice trembling. "I prayed to you every night! I tried so hard! Why did you make me so broken?!"
The woods gave no answer—until the wind abruptly died down.
Vespera froze.
The usual sounds of the forest—the rustling of leaves, the chirping of night crickets, the distant hoot of an owl—vanished instantly. The air pressure dropped so fast her ears popped, filling the silence with a heavy, terrifying stillness.
Snap.
A branch broke fifty feet to her left.
Vespera scrambled backward against the trunk of a massive oak tree, her heart hammering wildly. "Who's there?" she called out, her voice barely a whisper.
Out of the dense, swirling fog, five pairs of glowing, sickly yellow eyes materialized.
Slowly, five massive wolves prowled into the small clearing. They were hideous creatures—fur matted with dried blood and filth, ribs showing through thin hides, saliva dripping from exposed, yellowed fangs. Rogues. Wolves who had lost their human minds to dark, feral madness.
"Well, well, well..." a harsh, guttural voice rasped directly into Vespera's head through a rough telepathic link.
The lead rogue—a battle-scarred brute missing half of his right ear—stepped forward. His jaw snapped open, dripping saliva onto the mud.
"...what do we have here? A fresh little Ironfang meal, lost in our woods."
Vespera’s hands dug frantically into the dirt, her fingers closing around a heavy, fallen tree branch. She scrambled to her feet, holding the stick out in front of her like a sword. "Stay back!" she warned, trying to keep her voice from shaking. "I... my pack is right behind me!"
The lead rogue let out a wet, mocking bark that sounded eerily like a laugh.
"Don't lie to us, little bird," the rogue sneered into her mind. "We watched the whole show from the treeline. We smelled your bond snapping from miles away. You don't have a pack. You don't even have a wolf inside that soft little body."
Another rogue—a skinny, mangy grey beast—circled to her right, blocking her only path of escape. "She smells like fear. And human blood. Easy prey."
"Please," Vespera gasped, backing her spine flat against the oak tree. "I have nothing. Just let me go..."
"Oh, we'll let you go," the lead rogue growled, his eyes flashing with mindless violence. "Right after we tear you to pieces!"
The lead wolf lunged.
Vespera swung the thick branch with all her strength, but the beast was too fast. His massive, clawed paw swiped through the air, shattering the branch into splinters and slamming heavy into her chest.
The force sent Vespera flying backward. Her head clipped a moss-covered boulder, and the world exploded in a blinding flash of white pain before fading into dangerous grey shadow.
She collapsed onto her back, dazed, her vision swimming.
The lead rogue stepped over her, his heavy, muddy paws pinning her shoulders to the ground. The suffocating weight pressed the air right out of her lungs. He lowered his dripping snout until his hot, foul breath washed over her face.
"No wolf to save you," the rogue whispered into her mind, baring his lethal, yellow fangs right over her throat. "Die alone, defect."
Vespera squeezed her eyes shut. She couldn't fight. She couldn't run. Is this really how my story ends? she thought bitterly. Rejected, abandoned, and eaten in the dark?
Deep within her soul—far below the broken fragments of her rejected bond—a tiny, dormant spark suddenly flared to life.
It wasn't a wolf's heat. It was something older. Something vast, ancient, and terrifyingly furious.
Open your eyes, a soft, velvet voice whispered in the dark corners of her mind. Look at what dares to touch you.
Before the rogue’s teeth could sink into her throat, a violent wave of PURE SILVER LIGHT erupted from Vespera’s chest.
