CHAPTER 7 LUCA“Luca, you’re back!” Mae said, jumping up from the couch as I walked into the apartment. She wiped her tired eyes and padded over to me in the kitchen, leaning against the counter and yawning. I flicked the light on and stared down at her, brows furrowed. “Did you wait up for me?” “Maybe …” She grabbed my hand and pulled me back toward the front door. “Come on. I wanna get ice cream with you. Splitz’s Creamery down the street closes at twelve. If we leave now, we’ll make it there in time.” Pulling my hand away from hers, I stuffed them into my jean pockets and ignored the ache in my heart.
