The smell of freshly brewed coffee filled the kitchen, mixing with the buttery scent of toasted bread. Elena sat at the small dining table, her hands wrapped around a steaming cup, but she barely noticed the warmth seeping into her fingers. Her mind drifted - back to the cold interior of that black car, to the way the man's voice had cut through the silence. " Get out." She blinked, staring blankly at her reflection in the dark liquid. His presence was overwhelming, yet it wasn't his dominance that haunted her. It was his eyes. The way they had locked onto hers, sharp and assessing, as if he saw straight through her. Like he knew her." Elena?" Gabriella's voice snapped her back. She turned to see her best friend watching her with a smirk, spooning jam onto her toast. " Dio, I swear, you're still in shock over that stupid award." Elena frowned, not catching on." Huh?" Gabby rolled her eyes." The internship, genius. "You still look like you've been hit by a truck." She gestured vaguely toward Elena's face." I mean, you're literally staring into your coffee like it holds the secrets of the universe." Elena forced a laugh, her heart still hammering from her thoughts. " Right. Yeah. Guess it still hasn't sunk in." Gabriella grinned, nudging her playfully." Well, get over it already. "We've got a long day ahead, and I'm not dealing with your existential crisis before my first lecture." Elena nodded absently, pushing her half-eaten toast aside. She wasn't hungry anymore. The drive to campus was uneventful - until it wasn't. Gabby was singing along to the radio, completely oblivious, but Elena sat rigid in the passenger seat. Every flicker of movement in her peripheral vision had her on edge. She told herself she was being ridiculous. It was just a car. But when they stopped at a red light, the blaring honk of a horn made her jump. Her pulse spiked, panic flaring in her chest before she could control it. " Elena, what the hell?" Gabby laughed, glancing at her as she recovered from her startled flinch." It's just some i***t who doesn't know how traffic lights work." Elena exhaled slowly, forcing her shoulders to relax." Yeah. "I know. "Just...didn't sleep well." Gabby snorted." Oh, no. "Don't tell me you stayed up overthinking things again." Elena smiled weakly, not trusting herself to answer. She kept her gaze on the road ahead, but the unsettled feeling didn't leave her. Something was wrong, she could feel it. Somewhere in the city... The streets of Catania were alive with the hum of the city. The mid-afternoon sun hung high, casting long shadows on the surrounding buildings, but the city was still suffocatingly hot. Cars and people moved with purpose, navigating the busy streets like a well-rehearsed dance. Vittorio stepped out of the sleek black Rolls-Royce, the heat pressing against him as he surveyed the area. The industrial district. His sharp gaze scanning the area. This wasn't an ordinary meeting. He'd handled his dealings with Ferreira before, but today was different. The air was thick with tension, like a storm waiting to break. His men stood ready, hidden among the alleyways, their eyes trained on the warehouse ahead. His earpiece crackled to life. It was Lorenzo's voice, calm and steady, echoing through the small device." East side is clear. Ferreira's crew was already there. "We're set." Vittorio barely nodded in response. His men positioned themselves at key points around the warehouse, ready to spring into action at any moment. Vittorio couldn't afford to take any chances. He had to finish this deal and move forward. " Keep your eyes open," Vittorio muttered into the earpiece, his voice low but firm. Ferreira was known for his unpredictability - he liked to play the game on his own terms, which was why Vittorio always came prepared. As Vittorio approached Ferreira and his crew, the men exchanged the usual pleasantries. Ferreira, with his ever-present cocky grin, stepped forward." Belluci," he said, his voice oozing with confidence. "You always come prepared." He gestured to a heavy case at his feet." As agreed. It's all here." Vittorio's eyes never left Ferreira." I hope you've kept your end of the bargain." He took a deliberate step forward, the weight of the situation pressing against him. Ferreira's expression barely shifted, but there was a flicker of something - unease?- that flashed across his features before he masked it with a smirk." Belluci, you wound me," he said, spreading his arms dramatically." Do I look like the kind of man who goes back on his word?" Vittorio didn't answer immediately. Instead, he let the silence stretch between them, his cold stare pressing down on Ferreira like a weight. His men remained still, their presence a quiet but powerful reminder of who held control in this exchange. " That depends," Vittorio said at last." Did you bring everything?" Ferreira's smirk faltered, just slightly, before he nodded to one of his men. A battered steel case was dragged forward and placed on the ground between them. The metallic clink echoed in the open space, a stark contrast to the muffled hum of the city beyond the warehouse district. Vittorio's gaze flickered towards the case but didn't move toward it. Instead, he lifted his chin slightly. One of his men stepped forward, crouching down to unlock the latches. With a soft click, the lid was pushed open, revealing neat stacks of bills and a small compartment containing something wrapped in cloth. Vittorio remained impassive as his man inspected the contents, checking for anything out of place. Ferreira, however, shifted to his feet." You'll find it's all there," Ferreira said, his casual tone forced. The verification took mere seconds, but Vittorio had already seen enough. The way Ferreira's hand twitched slightly by his side, the tension in his stance - he was holding something back." Where's the rest?" Vittorio's voice was deceptively calm. Ferreira blinked." Rest?" Vittorio took a slow step forward, and the shift in his energy was immediate. The air thickened, pressing down on everyone. Ferreira's men subtly tensed, their hands twitching toward their weapons, but Vittorio's men were more controlled. A single misstep would mean bloodshed." Don't insult me, Ferreira." Vittorio's voice dropped to something more dangerous." You and I both know this isn't everything." Ferreira hesitated, and in that brief pause, Vittorio had his answer. Before Ferreira could react, Vittorio reached out, gripping him by the collar and dragging him forward until their faces were mere inches apart." You had one job," Vittorio said, his voice barely above a whisper, but it was the kind of whisper that sent a chill down a man's spine." I don't like being lied to." Ferreira swallowed hard." Listen, I -" Before Ferreira could answer, Vittorio looked at him one last time. The bullet left the barrel with cold precision, slamming into Ferreira's skull. The man crumpled instantly, a dark stain spreading beneath him. Chaos erupted in the warehouse as Ferreira's men scrambled to respond, but Vittorio's men were faster, moving with the fluidity of trained predators. Every shot rang out with lethal intent, but Vittorio remained calm, calculating, as he advanced through the haze of gunfire. " Vitto, move to the east side. " I've secured the perimeter. "The cars are waiting." Lorenzo's voice crackled through the earpiece, steady and commanding. Vittorio adjusted his stance, dispatching another body in his path with cold precision, his eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of danger. Lorenzo's voice was his guide, a constant reassurance as he cleared the space, eliminating any remaining threats in his path. But then something shifted. Lorenzo's voice crackled again, but this time there was an edge to it, a tension that wasn't there before. " Vitto - move quickly. They're-" Before he could finish, the unmistakable sound of a struggle broke through the earpiece, followed by the sound of a muffled grunt. Vittorio's heart thundered in his chest as the hairs on the back of his neck stood on end. " Lorenzo?" Vittorio's voice came through the earpiece, sharp and urgent. His eyes darted around, his every instinct telling him something was wrong. He quickened his pace, pushing through the warehouse, his pulse quickening with every step." I'm almost there," he muttered, his hand tightening around the grip of his gun. But then, the unmistakable crack of a gunshot pierced through the earpiece, and Vittorio froze, the sound ringing in his ears. A moment of silence followed, so heavy it felt like the world had stopped turning. " Lorenzo?" His voice cracked with desperation, his mind racing. Then he heard it." Vitto..." Lorenzo's voice was strained, almost too faint to hear, but the crack in it made Vittorio's stomach drop." Lower... The words barely reached Vittorio's ears, but the terror in Lorenzo's voice was clear. He pushed harder, fear clawing in his chest, the distance between them closing but feeling like a lifetime.
