CHAPTER 28 – Ashes After the Howl

422 Words
Dawn crept in slow and gray, filtering through torn branches and blood-dark leaves. The forest smelled of iron and smoke—magic residue fading into the cold air. What the night had taken, morning now revealed. Arielle stood at the center of the clearing, arms wrapped around herself as the last of the injured were carried back toward the pack’s boundary. Her wolf paced beneath her skin, restless, unsatisfied. Lyra had escaped again. Kael moved beside her without a word. His presence was solid—grounding. The bond between them had quieted from a roar to a steady hum, still warm, still watchful. “We won,” Ryn said hoarsely as he approached, blood drying along his jaw. “But barely.” Soren followed, expression tight. “Scouts report movement east. Rogues regrouping. And Lyra…” He paused. “She left marks. Wards. This wasn’t a raid—it was a test.” Arielle lifted her gaze. “She was measuring us.” “Yes,” Veylan said from behind them, leaning on his staff. The elder’s eyes were sharp despite his age. “And now she knows the Omega is awakening faster than expected.” Silence fell. Arielle’s pulse thudded. “Awakening to what?” Veylan studied her for a long moment. “To something older than the pack. Older than the bond as we know it.” Kael stiffened. “You should’ve told us.” “I wanted certainty,” the elder replied calmly. “Now I have it.” The wind shifted, stirring ash across the clearing. Arielle felt it then—a tremor beneath the earth, faint but undeniable. Not danger. Not yet. A calling. “I can feel it,” she said quietly. “Whatever she’s trying to reach it’s already reaching back.” Kael turned to her, eyes dark with resolve. “Then we don’t wait for the next attack.” Soren nodded. “We fortify the borders. Move the non-combatants. Prepare for siege.” Ryn cracked his neck, forcing a grim smile. “Good. I was hoping this wouldn’t be over.” As the pack dispersed, Kael remained with Arielle. He took her hand no dominance, no fire. Just steady connection. “You held the line,” he said. “You held everyone.” Arielle exhaled slowly, staring into the trees where Lyra had vanished. “And next time… I won’t just react.” The forest answered with a low, distant howl—echoing, ancient. Something had been awakened. And it was no longer hiding.
