⸻ CHAPTER 5 – Between Waking and Wanting Arielle woke slowly. Not to pain—but to weight. Something warm surrounded her, grounding, steady. The forest sounds were muted, distant, as though she were wrapped in a cocoon made of earth and shadow. Her body ached deeply, every muscle heavy, but the violent backlash from before had faded into a dull throb. She inhaled—and froze. Alpha. The scent hit her instantly. Pine, smoke, dominance. Her eyes snapped open. Kael. He was kneeling beside her, one knee pressed into the soil, jaw tight, eyes dark with something dangerously close to guilt. Shadows still lingered around her, thinner now, obedient—but unmistakably hers. “You’re awake,” he said quietly. Arielle pushed herself upright, ignoring the wave of dizziness. “Get away from me.” Kael didn’t move. “You collapsed,” he said. “Your body couldn’t handle the surge. If I hadn’t—” “If you hadn’t what?” she snapped, fury flaring hot and sharp. “Rejected me first?” Silence fell between them, thick and volatile. The bond was gone. She could feel that much. The ache remained—but whatever tether once pulled them together had snapped cleanly. And yet… something else lingered. Unspoken. Dangerous. “I shouldn’t be here,” Kael finally said. “But something is happening to you. Something tied to this forest. To the Hollow.” Her breath hitched at the word. So he felt it too. “I don’t need your concern,” Arielle said, forcing herself to her feet. The shadows responded instantly, curling closer as if to steady her. “You made your choice.” Kael’s gaze flicked to the shadows. To the faint silver thread beneath her skin. “That choice may have already cost more than I understood,” he admitted. That stopped her. Just for a second. But she hardened immediately. “Understanding now doesn’t change what you did.” He nodded once. “No. It doesn’t.” They stood there, facing each other beneath the trees—former mates, broken bond, power humming uncomfortably between them. Then the forest shifted. Not violently. Subtly. A presence brushed the edge of Arielle’s senses—curious, distant, watching. Lyra. She didn’t see her. But she felt the attention like cold fingers trailing down her spine. Kael stiffened. “We’re not alone.” “I know,” Arielle said softly. For the first time since her rejection, fear didn’t rise alone. Resolve followed it. “I’m leaving this territory,” she continued. “Not because you ordered it—but because staying will destroy everything.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “You won’t survive out there alone.” Arielle met his gaze, shadows lifting slightly around her shoulders. “Then it’s a good thing I’m not what you thought I was.” She turned and walked away before he could stop her. Behind her, Kael didn’t follow. But he watched. And somewhere deeper in the forest, something smiled.
