TANGLED

The morning after, Jenny woke up with a mix of emotions. Guilt, shame, and a hint of satisfaction swirled inside her. She knew she had crossed a line, betraying her friend Kate's trust. But she couldn't deny the connection she felt with James. As she got dressed, James emerged from the bathroom, his eyes locked on hers. "Last night was incredible," he said, his voice low and husky. Jenny felt a flutter in her chest, but she knew she had to be cautious. "It was a mistake," she said, trying to sound convincing. James raised an eyebrow. "A mistake you'd like to repeat?" Jenny hesitated, unsure of how to respond. Before she could answer, James's phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, his expression changing from playful to serious. The sense of guilt suddenly overpowering that of the excitement he felt earlier. "Kate's calling," he said, his voice tight. "I need to take this." Jenny's heart sank as James answered the call. She knew she had to face the consequences of her actions. As James talked to Kate, Jenny slipped out of the room, feeling like she was walking into a war zone. She knew her friendship with Kate would never be the same. * * * * Kate's heart skipped with just the thought of it, she had wanted to be at the party, to be there with and for James . Yet, the little she could do from afar, which was to call seemed like a waste of effort. She dialed James' number to at least check on how things were going and he wasn't picking up her calls. "Let me try Jenny's" she whispered to herself oblivious to the suspicions her heart condoned. Jenny wasn't picking up too, she tried to get some sleep and stop her heart from thinking such absurd things, the more she tried; the harder it was to sleep. The thought itself was provocative. Knowing the history of James, it didn't seem strange to her. She knew Jenny wouldn't think of such, no not Jenny, not her friend. A reality she just didn't want to admit to. She called the next morning, " hey" she greeted. " hi" James responded indifferently. " nice party right?" Kate asked not the kind of response she expected. " uh... yeah.... Yeah it was" James replied. " that's comforting, I called last night but you seemed busy" Kate said somehow feeling disappointed, something seemed off though she couldn't place her hand on it. " yeah.... You know..... busy with the party" James said, distracted by the sound Jenny made as she bolted to the door. " how about I call you back Kate, there's a few things that needs my attention" he said as he ended the call. Before he could get to Jenny, she was already gone. As the days passed, James and Jenny's stolen moments became more frequent. They would meet, exploring their bodies and getting lost in conversations. Jenny had never felt this way about anyone before, and she knew she was falling deeply in love with James. To Jenny, it was time to be selfish. She wanted James and would do anything to have him, Kate had snoozed; she should then prepare to lose. James, on the other hand, was torn. He cared for Kate, but his feelings for Jenny were undeniable. He felt guilty for betraying Kate's trust, but he couldn't resist Jenny's charm. His affairs with Jenny no longer seemed like a fleeting feeling or a fling. He was drawn to her like a fish drawn to water or a dog to a bone. However, the guilt remained. One night, as they lay together in James's bed, Jenny confronted him. "James, we can't keep doing this. I want you to be mine and mine alone, so you need to choose between me and Kate."she said sternly. James hesitated, knowing the consequences of his decision. "I don't know, Jenny. I care about Kate, but I feel something real with you. Telling me to choose would just be asking for too much." James replied. Jenny's eyes locked onto his. "Asking for too much? Then should I just be some hot b**ch, you sleep with whenever your real girlfriend isn't around??....... Look, I want you to be honest with Kate. Tell her how you feel. I no longer care what she thinks, it would be best coming from you and I want to believe that I am the best shot you got here" she added. James nodded, knowing he had to make a decision. But he was scared of hurting Kate and losing Jenny. Kate returned from her conference, eager to rekindle her romance with James. They reunited with a passionate night, and James tried to push his feelings for Jenny aside. Everything was because Kate wasn't around and Jenny was the next available, James thought. But Jenny was not willing to let go. She saw James's inability to end things with Kate as a sign of weakness and an opportunity to manipulate the situation. She started dropping subtle hints to Kate, suggesting that James might be cheating on her.
