I couldn't believe the words that had just left Thorian's lips.
I froze as if a cold wind had swept through the cozy corners of my heart.
He cannot be serious.
Does he really think that I'd settle for licking some leftovers of a damn Werewolf?
My heart squeezed in pain as I stared at his eyes.
“Thorian, I can't do that,” I said, my voice trembling,” I won't be someone's second choice or a means to an end.”
His expression changed immediately, his eyes growing darker and cold as his face furrowed in anger.
“You can't say no to me, Morgana. This is FOR YOU. I'm the strongest and most influential person in this city. Most ladies would be more than happy to take this.”
You've got to be kidding me.
I took a deep breath, fighting an almost impossible battle to steady my nerves before responding.
“I am not other ladies Thorian and …”
“Of course you are not.” He snapped, “you are a mere human. Nothing more. Do you think anyone would want to be involved with you? I'm doing you a favor, dammit, so you don't spend the rest of your miserable life alone.”
His words cut through me like a sharp-edged sword, and I fought back the tears in my eyes.
But I wasn't that surprised.
No.
Because Thorian has always been like this. Arrogant, condescending, spiteful.
I was just too blind, too swept up in the bliss of what, I felt, was a perfect romance to see it.
But now it's as clear as day, as if a veil has been dropped from my eyes.
God dammit.
“Thank you for the favor, but I'm sorry I cannot do that. I'll take care of myself just fine.”
He took a step back and his face darkened further, that I trembled in fear at what he might do.
“I have no idea who you think you are, but no one… I repeat, no one denies me. You will pay for this insolence, Morgana. I promise you that.”
And with that, he spun around and left the store, leaving me in tears and trembling.
The tears I had held back earlier now closed freely, and I couldn't stop the pain that gnawed at my heart.
Elowen had gone home when she was done, so I closed the front gate, after gathering my composure, and went straight home.
When I returned home that evening, Elowen was waiting for me. Her sharp eyes caught the traces of tears on my cheeks, and her expression shifted from curiosity to concern.
“Morgana, what's wrong?” she asked.
I collapsed onto the couch and buried my face in my hands.
She sat beside me and her hand stroked my back.
“What's wrong?” Rowena's little voice came from the door, and I looked up to see her face squeezed in a frown as she approached us.
Taking a deep breath, I told them everything. By the time I was done with the tale, my cheek was already drenched in tears again.
Elowen's eyes blazed with anger. “That scoundrel! I never really liked the i***t to begin with, but how dare he treat you like that?”
Her anger, as fierce as it was, was almost funny.
I wiped away my tears and managed a weak smile. “Because he feels he can get away with everything.”
“Thorian is used to getting what he wants,” Rowena whispered.
“Well, he can shove his nasty attitude up my ass. Let him f*****g grow up and stop being a child!” Elowen snapped.
She wrapped her arms around me in a comforting embrace. “I'm sorry about this, Morgana. But I say good riddance. He was a royal jerk.”
I smiled despite myself and nodded.
Good riddance indeed.
Together, we made our way to the kitchen, where the aroma of a simple, hearty meal filled the air. Rowena had prepared dinner, and we settled down around the table to eat.
Soon, with Rowena's stories, Thorian was forgotten, but that did nothing to stop the ache in my heart.
I went straight to bed after dinner, not wanting to talk any more about anything.
After a few minutes or hours of tossing around the bed, I finally gave in to sleep and let it swift me away.
*******
The following day, I tried to take my mind off Thorian and his stupid proposal as my sisters and I started our day in the store.
Rowena was away, so I had locked up the book section.
Sweet aromas of different pastries filled the air as Elowen baked up a storm in the kitchen.
And me?
I just pasted a smile on my face as I served the few customers trickling in one by one.
The shop wasn't as busy as it usually was, but I wasn't complaining. Perhaps it would get fuller by the end of the day.
But nevertheless it was still the perfect distraction I needed from Thorian.
Talking with the kids, taking orders, I decided that I'd not waste a single second of my time thinking about him or allowing myself to be heartbroken by his betrayal.
But of course, it was all easier said than done.
Occasionally his harsh words still echo through my mind.
All these while I thought that we had something special….
Oh how wrong I've been.
The door burst open interrupting my racing thoughts and I turned to see Thorian barging in with a group of his friends…or as Elowen would call them.."His minions."
And they all had sticks in their hands.
My pulse quickened and I dropped my empty tray on the nearest table as he approached me with a menacing grin.
"What on earth are you doing here?" I aske between clenched teeth trying…oh trying so hard to ignore the fear twisting my stomach as the note From yesterday flashed through my mind.
What's he going to do now?
Thorian grinned, "How did you like your gift yesterday?"
Oh the nerves of him.
Out of the corner of my eyes, I saw Elowen rush out of the kitchen, her eyes wide when she saw our new audience.
The few customers in the store already started walking out one by one, as if they could sense the impending doom
Thorian's men circled the tables with intimidating looks, and posed as if they were waiting for order.
I took a step back, "You already did your worst and proved your point. I get it, now I hope you are satisfied and leave me alone." I heard and hated the trembling in my room.
Thorian scoffed and leaned closer to me, "You think I've done my worst? Oh sweet sweet Morgana. That was just a trailer of what I could to you. And I will do more. Like…." He spun around and kicked over a table a table, sending pastries crashing to the floor as the table shattered m
I was startled, frozen in shock but Elowen's scream tore me out of my shock.
"Thorian!" I screamed but before I could take a step forward, his hand gripped me, stopping me.
"Let me go! What are you doing?"
He grinned again, "See Morgana. You don't get it. When I want some….I get it. I won't take a No, especially not from a nobody like you. Cos I can easily ruin you with a snap of my fingers…."
He snapped his fingers and I jumped as another glass table shattered to the floor
"What on earth are you doing?" Elowen screamed, lunging forward, but two men held her back.
I watched as my sister struggled against their grasp, tears streaming down her face_
" Let me go!!! You have no right to do this!"
I couldn't even say a word- couldn't find it in me to fight or cry. I just stared at Thorian in shock, my heart squeezing painfully as he smirked.
"See- I'm just getting started, but baby.. " he lifted his hand to touch my face, and I resisted the urge to curl away in disgust, "You can stop this and you know it. Just say yes, baby. Be my mistress."
I scoffed and lifted my eyes to meet him, "You must be joking. Do your worst, Thorian , because I'd rather die."
But I should have known better than to challenge Thorian.
He dropped his hand from my face and I tensed, waiting for …maybe a hit.
Which I heard .. but it wasn't on me.
Elowen's cry followed the loud smack, and I turned with a gasp just in time to see one of the men deliver another slap to her cheek.
"No. Stop!!!" But my scream fell on deaf ears.
Thorian held me tightly so I was unable to move.
"Thorian please! Stop them!" I screamed again, my face drenched with tears as I struggled to break free from his grip.
He didn't stop them, neither did the man listen to my pleas.
He descended on Elowen with slap after slaps while two men held her down.
My throats were turning sore from screaming. Elowen's cries at each slap pierced the air, hitting me in the chest like stabs of a dagger.
"Stop…please stop!" My voice was hoarse with pain.
As if the slaps weren't enough, the nah gripped her blouse and tore it, shredding away the fabric and exposing her skin and underwear.
My vision blurred with a red haze of anger and hot tears as I watched helplessly.
Thorian laughed…" that's enough," he said and the men released Elowen but they already caused too many damages
My sisters dropped to the floor like a pile of rags, wrapping her arms around her body which was shaking in sobs that tore my heart.
"No…" I whispered.
Thorian spun me around to face him. The look in his eyes made my skin crawl.
My sister's sobs filled the room and I couldn't even bring myself to look at her.
"Does that change your mind now? So let me ask again. Will you be my mistress?"
More tears gushed down my cheeks.
I had no idea what it was- maybe the smug look on his face, maybe the memory of our little store burning, or the sound of my sister's sobs- but something snapped inside me and anger rushed through me.
That bastard!!!
A loud sound echoed through the room and everyone in the room fell silent as his eyes widened in shock.
It was only when u felt the tingling on my own palm that I came back to my senses and realization dawned on me.
Holy s**t I just slapped Thorian.
With shaky legs, I moved backward, wide eyed as the terror of what he could do filled me.
