It Wasn’t Supposed To Be Like This

Chapter 16

*Xaviers point of view*

I was on my way home from the construction site lost in thought when I felt one of my tires blow. I pulled to the side of the road flipping on my hazards. I just wanted to get home to Avery, of course the first time I leave her in a week and this happens. I pulled out my phone so I could call for assistance.

“Gabriel one of my tires blew on the way home, please let Avery know I’ll be a little late and please send someone here to help me.” I walked around to the trunk to look for my spare. It wasn’t in there. That was odd I always had a spare.

“Yes Alpha, Lucas is on his way now, do you need anything else?” I should I tell him to bring another tire but we can just have it towed tomorrow.

“No I just need to be picked up. Thank you.” We got off the phone and I sent Lucas my location so he could find me and sat back down in the car. I started to get a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach, I felt like someone was watching me, I locked the doors. I looked out my window and could see glowing eyes looking back at me. I took a deep breath and shook it off pulling my phone back out so I could message Avery.

M-hey princess, I hit a little bump in the road but I’ll be home soon.-

She answered me back almost immediately.

A- okay, I love you be safe.-

“Please somebody help!” I heard a woman screaming from the woods. My instincts told me to run towards the cries for help but I felt like it was a trap. I kept the windows and door closed.

“PLEASE SOMEBODY!” The screams where getting closer, I could see a woman running out of the woods covered in blood. It was Ashley. I quickly opened my door and ran to her aid.

“Ashley what happened?” She was hyperventilating looking around her like someone was just going to come back out and grab her.

“I-I.. I was out letting my wolf run when a rogue attacked me.” I opened the passenger door for her to get in. She quickly got in and locked the doors.

“Ashley unlock the doors.” She shook her head.

“I’m sorry this is the only way.” I checked my pockets for my phone. Of course, I left it in the car.

“Ashley what is going on?” She didn’t look at me just held her head down. She knew that if this plan didn’t work out she would be killed for treason.

“Ashley you’re better than this unlock the door.” I heard growling coming from the woods now. Lucas please get here fast.

Isaac get ready to shift forward.

The growling was getting closer and coming from every direction now. I could see glowing eyes from everywhere now.

“I don’t know who you are or what you want but I have men on the way already. I would advise you to take a step back.” They started to approach me now. There were 5 small wolves, but still too many for me to take on my own. Why couldn’t anything go right for me or Avery?

I could see headlights coming I just had to wait a little longer Lucas was almost here. The headlights got closer and I could tell they weren’t from Lucas’s car. As it got closer I could tell it was Layla’s car, what was she doing here? She pulled up and rolled the window down.

“Xavier you need to get in now, don’t ask any questions come on.” I didn’t know if I could trust and I couldn’t just leave Ashley here and Lucas was on his way.

“How’d you know I was here?” It suddenly dawned on me that no one besides Ashley, the wolves and Lucas knew where I was, how did she find me?

“Xavier I’m serious get in now.” I didn’t have any other choice right now, I could either wait and potentially get attacked by other wolves or go with her. I hesitantly opened the door and got in.

“I will tell you everything you want to know, we just have to leave and now.” I nodded my head and she took off without looking back. This still felt like a set up.

“I need to call my men and let them know I was picked up and let Avery know I’m safe.” She handed me her phone, I quickly called them both and gave her the phone back.

“Okay now answers, why are you in town and how’d you know where I was?” I looked at her, I had never realized how pretty she was. She took a deep breath.

“Okay, so first off I’m a witch, I’ve been working with Zeke for years now trying to figure out everything there was to know about Avery.” Her best friend, she betrayed her best friend!?

“Secondly, Zeke is still alive. When you guys fought that Friday, it was actually Dylan, I had plans to keep helping Zeke until I found out Avery is already pregnant. Do you know who the father is yet?” I shook my head no.

“We had a paternity test done a few days ago it could take up to a week before we get the results, the pup is growing abnormally fast though so there’s a good chance it’s mine and we also think it’s growing so fast because of her powers.” I felt weird telling her all of this because it could still be a set up.

“Okay, anyways I stopped helping Zeke because she’s already pregnant and I wouldn’t want to hinder a pups life for him, that goes against my morals. I know it sounds twisted because of everything I just told you but I do still have morals and the pup is innocent in all of this. Also I’m really sorry for this.” Before I realized what was happening she reached behind me, her hand coming back up as she hit me in the head.

*Laylas point of view*

I wasn’t lying when I told him I wasn’t working with Zeke anymore but I did have my own agenda. I quickly headed towards my apartment. When I realized Avery and Xavier would be moving back here I had arrangements made so I could be close to them constantly. I felt bad for hitting him in the head but it was for his own protection.

M-I’m on my way back right now, please have the spell ready when I get there.-

I didn’t need a test to prove that Avery was pregnant with Xaviers pup. I knew, I’ve known for years now that this was destined to happen and they have no idea the danger they’re in. I could see my apartment coming into view. I made sure it was a safe distance out of town and tucked in between two mountains. No body else knew I was here aside from my helper. I even gave the landlord something to make him forget that I was even here but made sure he remembered someone was here. I pulled up and turned my car off.

M- we’re here please come grab him.-

I could have easily used my magic to carry him into the house but I was getting weak. I opened my door and walked around to the passenger side where Dylan met me.

“Thank you for choosing to help me, I know your loyalties lies with him.” Zeke had no idea Dylan was even still alive.

“After the stunt he pulled with the fight I could never respect him the way I used to.” I knew Zeke was supposed to fight Xavier and that he wanted me to make a potion for Dylan so he could take his place, I wasn’t aware that it was a fight to the death. I don’t think anyone knew that. Dylan scooped Xavier up from the car and carried him inside. He had everything I needed for the spell ready for me. I walked over to the side and got on my knees while he laid Xavier in the middle. I gently placed my hands on his temples and began to recite my spell. I could feel myself weaken more by the second. I quickly finished the spell.

“Please drive him back to his pack and leave him by the gates, I don’t want anyone to see you.” He nodded his head and quickly scooped him back up and left. I didn’t have much time left there were a few more loose ends I needed to tie up.

I wrote a letter for Dylan to find once he got back explaining what he needed to do from here on out and another witch to contact if this didn’t work. I looked down at my hands as they began to wrinkle. I had one final spell to do.

“I’m begging to the heavens above that you let this work.” I shouted, as my candles relit themselves letting me know the gods heard my plea but not ensuring that this would work.

I got on my hands and knees.

“With my last breath

I give all I have left

To the protector of the wolves

May this find you one day and help you rule.”

I blew out all of candles and got up. I wasn’t ready to go, but I was getting old it was my time. I put everything back in place and made sure the letter was somewhere for Dylan to find. I left my apartment and started towards the woods.

“I’m ready.” I felt my soul being lifted out of my body, I looked around to see the fragile body I had been inhabiting for all these years fall to the ground. I hope everything works out the way it’s supposed to. I looked back up the sky and closed my eyes. It was finally time.

“Avery please never stop fighting.” I whispered as everything went black.

*Averys point of view*

I couldn’t wait to talk to Xavier but I was getting sleepy, I made my way up to our room.

“Hey please come wake me up as soon as Xavier gets home I have something to talk to him about.” I stopped an omega who was cleaning the stairs.

“Of course Luna.” I kept walking my eyes growing heavier the closer I got to our room. I walked in and slipped into bed a deep sleep falling over me quickly.

“Avery please never stop fighting.” A thought so loud it woke me up. I have no idea how much time had passed but from what I could tell he still wasn’t home. I got up and put my robe on.

I walked into the hallway and looked around. There were people running every direction. I heard someone scream, I ran down the stairs.

Danielle was laying on the floor crying holding someone.

“What’s going on?” One of the omegas came over to me, sadness in eyes.

“I’m sorry Luna, it’s Alpha Xavier, they found him by the gates.” What no, he couldn’t be hurt. I would know if he was hurt right?

“Is he alive?” She looked over her shoulder and back at Danielle.

“As far as we can tell he is, we’re going to take him to the pack doctor now.” I nodded my head and we walked out of the house.

“Avery you need to go back up and rest, I will come get you if anything happens or when he wakes up.” I turned around to see Axel standing there, he was right. I did need to rest but Xavier didn’t leave me the whole time I was in the hospital, why would I leave him?

“Avery please we can’t worry about Xavier and you. I promise he’s in good hands. If you need company I’m sure Francis and Danielle will come join you.” I nodded my head giving one last glance towards Xavier.

“I love you.” I said barely above a whisper. I hope he’s okay. I walked back into the house and up the stairs. I didn’t want company right now I truly hoped Danielle and Francis would stay away. I walked into my room and sat on the bed. Breath Avery, everything in me wanted to go for a run but I wasn’t able to transform while pregnant. I sighed and laid back on the bed. All I could do was wait.

“Luna, are you awake?” I heard a small knock on the door. I guess I had fallen asleep at some point, growing a pup was so exhausting.

“Yes I am, come in!” The door opened and there stood an omega, she stepped to the side and Xavier came into view.

“Hey princess did you miss me?” I ran up and jumped into his arms.

“What happened?” Worry taking me over again. I was so happy he was okay but I still don’t understand how he got hurt or where he was.

“Honestly I don’t remember anything. I just remember my tire blowing, Ashley running out of the woods and then wolves coming after that it’s a blur.” He hugged me tight. I was so happy he was home. Whoever hurt him obviously did something to his memory. They returned him home though so I wasn’t super worried. Wait did he say Ashley ran out of the woods?

“What do you mean Ashley ran out of the woods?” He nodded his head and walked us over to the bed.

“Yeah she ran out of the woods screaming for help. Me being me I couldn’t not help her so I quickly got out, she told me she let her wolf out for a run and then wolves attacked her, I opened the car door for her to get in and once she was in she locked the doors and wouldn’t let me back in.” Maybe Ashley would know something.

“Don’t worry we already have hunters out looking for her. She said something about this was the only way for her plan to work.” What plan, I broke from my thoughts when the pup kicked. That reminded me I needed to tell Xavier the news.

“Oh by the way I got a call yesterday from the doctor.” His eyes grew wide and I cupped his cheek and started nodding.

“Are you sure?? Like positive?” I nodded my head again as he hugged me tight once more.

“I’m sure Xavier, the pup is really yours! You’re going to be a daddy!” A tear started to roll down his cheek. I wiped it away and smiled at him.

“What’s going on?” I have a feeling this has to do with his family but I didn’t want to assume.

“I just hope we’re able to give this pup the family they deserve. My mom left a really long time ago, she didn’t tell anyone where she was going or why she was leaving, she just left. It nearly killed my dad.” I hugged him.

“ Xavier I think our little boy is going to have the best family around. Seeing how you already are with him when you didn’t even know if he was yours.” He stopped me, and looked at me.

“It’s a boy!?” Whoops I guess I forgot to tell him that.

“Did I not say that earlier?” He shook his head no and I just chuckled. Pregnancy brain was already getting the best of me.

“So Cillian then? Since that’s what you were told the other day when you met him.” I started to wonder why the name Cillian. What did it mean.

I pulled out my phone and looked it up.

“Warrior, that’s what Cillian means.” I think it’s a fitting name. I put my hand on my belly and felt him kick in response, I wasn’t quite ready to be a mom but this is my fate, I was chosen for him. I was going to be the best mom I could be for him and the best mate for Xavier.

“Let’s get married tomorrow.” I looked at Xavier as his mouth fell open.

“Are you sure? I know you aren’t supposed to do much right now.” I nodded my head, I hadn’t been more sure of anything in my life.

“We’ll just have a small ceremony with close family, out by the lake?” He nodded his head. And cupped his hands around my cheeks.

“I love you so much Avery.” I kissed him and didn’t pull away until my lungs started to burn. If I had learned anything over these last couple of weeks, life was way too short and anything can happen. I need to love and cherish the time and people I have.

“I do have more questions for you though since I am going to be your wife.” I trailed off and looked at him.

“Of course anything for you princess.” He stood up and went to the closet grabbing a new change of clothes.

“How about a shower first?” I just laughed and walked towards him, dropping my clothes on the floor behind me.

“If you insist Alpha.” He just grinned from ear to ear and picked me up. I squealed as I wrapped my legs around his waist. I could get used to this.
