CHAPTER TWO: House Eviction

1225 Words
I didn't open the text. I shoved my phone back into my pocket. I connected my earpiece to play my favourite song. I would have boarded a cab home but that was for those who had nothing to worry about, who had no bills to pay. It was a long walk but I finally arrived home. Well, it wasn't actually “home” in the right sense. It was just a small space where I sat to cry all night, where I placed up a board with pictures of all my suspects, especially the Hawkes pinned on it. It was a place where I reflected on myself. I walked into the building taking the stairs. It was a 50-storey building. The power at this side of the city was unstable and so we avoided using the elevator Incase we experience a power outage we won't be stuck in the elevator because no one would come and save you. Fortunately for me, I lived in the third building upstairs. I walked slowly as if dragging my feet that felt heavy. I arrived at the hallway leading to my room but what I saw next gave me the shock of my life, it literally caught me off guard. My belongings, well not actually belongings like normal people, it was just my luggage of clothing and a few other stuff I was able to savage when the government officials seized and freezed my family properties. I saw my belongings on the doorway of my place. The room was locked. Then I remembered the text I got earlier, I rushed into my bag pulling out my phone. I unplugged the earpiece pausing the music. “You have been evicted from room 108, building complex, Lay-Way street, 110625 due to outstanding balances and unpaid rent. You're to pay the outstanding of $13,657 within a week or we would be forced to take legal actions.” My grip tightened on my phone, my knuckles whitening as I read through the message. I wanted to throw my phone on the floor in anger but I was reminded that I wouldn't be able to afford a new one. I didn't know what to do at this point. I tried calling my landlord but it didn't go through. It was already 7:38pm. I squatted on the door of my room, my head resting on my hands. What do I do now? Should I ask Marcus for an upfront payment? What was I even thinking? Was I even thinking? Would Marcus be able to give me an upfront of $13,000? I brought out my phone, Evelyn coming to my mind. Evelyn was the only friend I still had after my family downfall, before then, I had tons of friends who we did go out and party all night with. We did travel round the world taking tours but ever since my parents' downfall they had cut ties with me. I totally understand them, in their words “Being friends with you now is bad for my image” “Hey Eve, something came up. Are you home?” My fingers hovered over the send button. I was hesitant, I didn't want to make it seem like I was bothering her. However, I hit the send button. My eyes were glued on the screen as I watched the message being delivered. I sat there waiting for a response. “What's up Selena? Sure! I'm home. I just got back from work!” Evelyn replied. Good thing she is at home. She just got back from “work”, an actual job not the ass kissing I do for a living. “I just got kicked out of my apartment and I have nowhere to go.” I was hesitant at first, I was always hesitant about everything I do, I hit the send button and the message was delivered. Evelyn replied to me faster than I anticipated. “You can come to my place. I've already booked an Uber. He would be there to pick you up in a few minutes.” I read the message, a smile crawling on my face accompanied with tears running down my cheek. Evelyn was a jewel. A pillar in my life. I'm happy I had kept her in my life when we first met. I had met her as a flight attendant on one of my luxurious trips to Paris, she was very nice and we exchanged contact. We had kept in touch for a long time until my world started tearing apart. I had expected her to back off, to run away, to ignore me but….but she stayed. I went downstairs waiting for the Uber man. The driver came faster than expected. He followed me upstairs to help me get my things down. In a few minutes, we were down and we drove off. I sat in the car, my gaze fixed outside the window. I could watch as the environment changes from a ghetto to a suburb. It wasn't much but it was different and better than where I was coming from. The driver stopped in front of an apartment building. I had only been here twice, before my family went down the drain Evelyn and I had always hung out at our mansion. The driver placed my things down as he drove off. Evelyn had paid him off before he came to pick me up so I didn't have to pay. I picked my luggage and struggled to carry the rest of my possessions as I walked into the building. The building was different from my own, the elevator was working. I walked into the elevator placing some of my things on the floor as I hit the button taking me to the 46th floor. The elevator had a lot of stops but luckily there weren't enough people entering so my stuff littered on the floor wouldn't be a problem. I finally arrived at the 46th floor, dragging myself out. I knocked on her door, the first knock was met with silence. I knocked again and she opened up. “Hey Selena. It's been a long time.” Eve said, she gave me a warm hug while pulling me inside. “I know.” I said, releasing myself from her embrace. I walked towards the door to bring my things inside and she supported me. We arranged everything and afterwards sat on the sofa in her living room. “So do you want to talk about it?” Evelyn asked, breaking the lurking silence that had filled the room. “I got kicked out. I need to pay an amount around $13,000 or else my landlord would take legal action against me.” I said. “That's terrible, don't worry we would find a way to sort this out. You can stay at my place while we think about what to do, okay?” Evelyn said, trying to reassure me that we would definitely find a way to make it work. “Thank you Eve. Thank you,” I said in turn. I hoped everything would turn out fine. I just wanted to pay off my outstanding debt so I can get back to my own place. I don't want to be a burden to anyone, I don't like feeling like a burden to anyone.
