Florencia continued driving along Pacific Coast Highway. They passed the Malibu Pier and the Malibu Lagoon State Beach. As they traveled past the Malibu Bluffs State Recreation Area, down a sharp incline, Ryan noticed that Florencia's GPS navigator directed her to make the next left-hand turn, onto Malibu Road, which was directly along the ocean. Understanding they were close to their arrival, Ryan perked up in his seat and watched the waves roll onto the beach as they maneuvered onto Malibu Road. The narrow, two-lane road descended to a packed row of beachside homes on the right and bluff-side homes on the left.
