I had no idea how I was going to get a van, but I was so encouraged by my wife’s sudden interest in something and, even more, by her determination—things I hadn’t witnessed in more than five months—that I knew I would move mountains to fulfill the promise she’d just made. We retraced our steps through the slum. Again, I noticed her pace had quickened. At one point, I said, “You seem pretty sure we can get a van.” I was still uncertain of her level of responsiveness and wondered if its reappearance at the UNICEF building was only momentary. Though her answer came immediately. “I know you’ll find a way.” After that we had what I would call a normal conversation.
