herAfter dinner we returned to what Arthur referred to as “the great room” and sat on the only two uncovered couches. I followed his lead and brought my wine glass. Both were almost empty. A moment later, Marina appeared again. She was still wearing the black tracksuit and walked down the stairs and into the dining room. I assumed she was going to clear the table but walked past it and into the kitchen. A few seconds later she came out and headed toward us holding another bottle of wine and a glass. “Do you mind?” she asked. She handed Arthur the bottle and held out the glass and waited for him to fill it. “I’m going to sleep,” she announced. “Don’t stay up all night.” She took a sip from her glass and walked back across the room and climbed the stairs until she was out of view.
