Somehow, Lester kept his job for twenty years. The company was located in an office tower downtown—the only thing about it that remained constant. During Lester’s twenty years, it had changed the type of media it produced and had grown and shrunk so often that Lester occasionally lost track of what it produced. He’d seen hundreds of new cubicles suddenly appear in newly leased floors followed by hundreds of new hires who filled those cubicles. He’d seen entire divisions severed off like limbs from a dying tree and the exodus of entire floors of people. Though on balance it did appear to grow more often than it shrunk and many of its transitions involved swapping out one group of employees for another similar sized group.
