Chapter 24 It was getting late. Lord and Lady Pennington had left, and James and I were the only ones at our table. “Well, I’m done with dancing,” he said. It wasn’t fair. I’d watched while some very lucky ladies had got to dance with James. If it hadn’t been for my bugger-all ankle, I would have too. I might not have been able to take him in my arms and waltz him around the floor, but I could have danced a fast number in his general vicinity. “Care for one last beer?” “That’d be grand.” He ran his fingertips over the back of my hand. “I’ll be back shortly.” “I’ll be here.” I smiled at him until he turned away, and then I grimaced.
