Chapter 16 When the door opened, rousing me from a light doze, I knew immediately where I was: James’s bedroom. Without opening my eyes, I categorized each of the noises I could hear, slight though they were. James’s quiet footsteps as he entered; the snick as he turned on the lamp and the soft light that glowed red through my eyelids; the rattling sound of the curtain rings as he drew the curtains closed, shutting out the night. I stretched, feeling the kinks snap out of my joints, and yawned. “Sorry to wake you, sweetheart.” “Not at all, James. I’d have wakened soon anyroad.
