Chapter one: Into the Abyss

674 Words
The grand gates of the Abyss loomed before Selene, carved from obsidian and pulsing with dark energy. A kingdom of shadows stretched beyond them, hidden beneath the eternal crimson sky. This was the Demon Lord’s domain. And now, her prison. The moment she stepped past those gates, she felt it—a shift in the air, a whisper of something ancient, something watching. Azrael walked beside her, his long coat trailing behind him. He did not look at her, but she knew he was aware of every step she took. "You hesitate," his voice broke the silence. "Are you afraid?" Selene forced a breath through her lips, steadying herself. "Should I be?" A smirk ghosted across his lips. "That depends." He walked ahead, and for a moment, she saw it—a flicker of something dangerous. Not just power, but understanding. Azrael was no mere ruler. He was a being who had lived too long, seen too much. And he was watching her. --- The Demon Lord’s Castle Selene’s first glimpse of his palace stole the breath from her lungs. It was massive, carved into the mountains themselves, with dark spires that twisted toward the blood-red sky. Flames flickered from enchanted lanterns, casting eerie shadows over runes that pulsed with demonic magic. It was nothing like the Celestial Palace. This place was alive—breathing, shifting, whispering. As they stepped inside, demon nobles turned to watch her, their glowing eyes filled with curiosity... and hunger. A tall demon with golden horns and slitted crimson eyes stepped forward, bowing mockingly. "So, this is the celestial bride?" His voice was smooth, but beneath it, Selene sensed the malice. Azrael didn’t break stride. "Mind your tongue, Vael." The demon—Vael—chuckled. "Of course. Forgive me, my lord. I simply find it fascinating." Azrael’s gaze darkened. "What?" Vael smiled. "That you would bring something so fragile into the Abyss." Selene felt it before she saw it—the shift in the air, the weight of power pressing down on the hall. Azrael’s voice was quiet, but absolute. "Do you think I would bring something here that I could not break?" The hall fell silent. Selene’s pulse pounded, but she forced herself to meet Azrael’s gaze. Did he mean that as a warning? Or a challenge? Whatever it was, the demon nobles stepped back, murmuring amongst themselves. Vael smiled, but this time, he did not look at Selene. He looked at Azrael. Curious. Knowing. And Selene realized something. Azrael had never brought a celestial here before. --- The First Night Her chambers were nothing like she expected. No golden cage. No chains. Instead, she stood in a massive, luxurious room, dark stone walls lined with ancient bookshelves, a balcony overlooking the endless Abyss. A bed, draped in deep red, sat at the center. Too inviting. Too… intimate. Selene turned, pulse quickening as she found Azrael standing in the doorway. He leaned against the frame, watching her with that same unreadable expression. "You expected a dungeon, didn’t you?" he said. She lifted her chin. "Does it matter?" Azrael took a step forward. The room felt smaller. "You don’t trust me," he murmured. "Should I?" she shot back. A slow smirk. "No." Her fingers twitched. She was trained for war, trained to kill. But something about Azrael unsettled her. Not his power. Not his reputation. But the way he looked at her, like he saw right through her. "You’re not what I expected," he said suddenly. Selene narrowed her eyes. "What did you expect?" Azrael tilted his head. "Someone more… obedient." A cold laugh left her lips. "Then you’ve made a mistake." Azrael chuckled, low and dangerous. "Perhaps." And then—he turned, walking away. Leaving her alone. Selene exhaled, realizing she had been holding her breath. She had entered the Abyss expecting a monster. But Azrael was something worse. He was curious. And that meant he was watching. She needed to move carefully. She needed to kill him before he figured out why she was really here. ---
