The morning sun spilled through the tall windows of the school, but the warm light did nothing to calm the tension. Aria, Zara, Mina, and Leo met in the library, crystals in hand, ready for whatever came next. The events of the previous day were still fresh in their minds.
“We need to patrol the school today,” Leo said, voice low but steady. “If the veil is breaking, there’s no telling what could slip through next.”
Zara groaned. “I didn’t sign up for a haunted school patrol.”
Mina shot her a look. “Better haunted than dead.”
Aria tightened her grip on her crystal. “He’s right. Let’s split up. We can cover more ground, but stay within sight of each other.”
They moved silently through the halls, ears straining for the faintest sound, eyes scanning for any flicker of movement. The library’s protective aura barely reached beyond its walls, leaving the corridors exposed.
It started with a whisper—a faint rustling from the far end of the corridor. Aria raised her hand, crystal glowing faintly. The shadow materialized, stretching into the shape of a wolf, its eyes gleaming amber like the creature from the hallway the day before.
“Stay calm,” Leo whispered. “Focus your energy.”
The wolf lunged, faster than their eyes could track. Zara flung her shield forward, and the creature bounced off, snarling. Mina stepped from the shadows, manipulating her own shadow to wrap around the wolf, slowing its movements. Aria concentrated, sending a sharp beam of golden light that hit the wolf’s chest, forcing it to retreat.
Before they could relax, another shadow appeared—this one smaller but multiple, like a pack emerging from the walls themselves. The hall seemed to ripple as more shapes emerged, whispering, snarling, circling.
Suddenly, a bright light cut through the shadows. A figure stepped forward—a teenage boy, dressed in sleek dark clothing, with a crystal of his own glowing silver in his hand. The shadows recoiled from him instantly.
“Who—?” Aria began.
“I’m Orion,” the boy said, voice calm but firm. “I’m here to help… if you’ll let me.”
Zara’s eyes narrowed. “Help? Or secretly spy on us?”
Orion smiled faintly. “Trust must be earned. But right now, we don’t have time for doubts.”
Together, the five of them formed a circle, combining their energies. Light and shadow collided in the hall, the crystals pulsing with intensity. The wolves—shadow creatures—lunged, twisted, and fell back, unable to break through the unified barrier.
Aria felt her power surge as her energy linked with Orion’s silver crystal, a new layer of strength she hadn’t felt before. The combined force drove the shadows back, sending them disappearing into the walls.
When the last shadow vanished, the hallway was quiet again. The sunlight outside seemed warmer, less threatening. Aria, breathless, looked at her friends and the newcomer.
Leo’s expression was unreadable, but there was a spark of approval in his eyes. “He’s strong. But be careful. Not everyone who shows up with magic is trustworthy. The veil draws many kinds of attention.”
Orion stepped closer, his crystal dimming slightly. “I only want to protect this school. The veil is fragile. It’s going to take all of us—together—to keep it from collapsing.”
Aria nodded, feeling both relief and unease. Another ally had appeared, but questions remained. Could he truly be trusted? Or was he the start of a new challenge?
The black cat jumped onto her shoulder, purring softly, silver eyes gleaming knowingly. Aria took a deep breath. One thing was certain—the veil had drawn them into a world far more dangerous than they had imagined. And the real battles were only just beginning.
