VEIL OPEN

515 Words
The next morning, Aria woke with a strange heaviness in her chest. She couldn’t tell if it was nerves or excitement—or maybe both. Zara burst in, backpack swinging, sneakers squeaking against the floor. “Morning, doom-watcher! Any new shadows?” she asked, grinning. Aria rubbed her eyes. “Not yet… but I have a feeling something big is coming.” Mina leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. “You mean danger again? I’m starting to think your life is just a magnet for trouble.” “Maybe it is,” Aria muttered. After School – The First Challenge By mid-afternoon, the school felt… off. The air was thick, and faint whispers seemed to float along the hallways. Aria, Zara, Mina, and Leo gathered in the usual hidden room. “We’ve seen creatures in small amounts,” Leo said, pacing. “Now, one has crossed fully into the school. It won’t just disappear this time.” Aria swallowed. “What kind of creature?” Leo gestured toward the window. Outside, shadows stretched unnaturally long across the courtyard. A creature with multiple limbs, glowing amber eyes, and a body that flickered between smoke and solid form lurked near the school fence. Zara gasped. “Uh… that thing looks hungry.” Mina clenched her fists. “Or dangerous. Definitely both.” Leo nodded. “And curious. It’s testing the veil, like the others. But this one has the strength to harm anyone it touches.” Planning the Encounter Aria, Zara, and Mina prepared cautiously. Leo handed each of them small glowing crystals. “These will protect you,” he explained. “For now. Focus on keeping the creature contained. If it reaches the main hallway, it could cause chaos—or worse.” The four of them approached the courtyard. The creature’s eyes flickered toward them, and for a moment, the air seemed to freeze. Then it lunged. Aria focused, raising her hand instinctively. A faint shimmer of golden light erupted from her palm, forming a barrier between them and the creature. It hissed, recoiling, sparks dancing off the invisible wall. Zara’s crystal glowed bright, sending a protective aura around her. Mina moved swiftly, positioning herself to corner the creature with Leo’s guidance. Together, they formed an awkward but functional team. First Victory The creature let out a final, low growl and, with a swirl of shadow and light, retreated back into the cracks of the courtyard wall. The air slowly cleared, and the normal sounds of school returned. Zara collapsed against a bench. “That… was… insane.” Mina exhaled sharply. “Not bad, Vale. You did okay.” Aria wiped sweat from her forehead. “We… we actually did it. Together.” Leo’s dark eyes softened just a little. “Good. Remember this. Alone, none of you could have stopped it. Together, you might survive what’s coming next.” The black cat appeared again, mewing as if to approve. Aria knelt and stroked it. Its silver eyes glinted knowingly. This is only the beginning, she thought. And for the first time, she felt… ready.
