Chapter 13: The Moonlit Crossing

324 Words
The sky turned silver as night settled in. Caelen led Elara through the winding forest, now quieter, more reverent. The trees bent subtly toward them, leaves brushing her shoulders as they passed—as if the Hollow Wood knew what was coming and wanted to bear witness. They reached a pool nestled between ancient roots, still and glowing faintly under the rising moon. Elara stopped. “This is it?” Caelen nodded. “The Veil is thinnest here. This pool is a crossing point between realms—one of the last the Moon Court still controls.” She stepped to the water’s edge. The surface shimmered like spun glass, showing not her reflection, but a landscape of strange beauty: silver trees, twin moons overhead, a palace built into a crescent cliff. “It’s beautiful,” she whispered. “It’s also dangerous,” Caelen said gently. “You’ll need to be careful. The Fae world is full of rules and riddles. A single misstep could cost more than you know.” Elara turned to him. “And you’ll be with me?” His gaze didn’t waver. “Until the stars forget your name.” She flushed, unsure how to answer the words that felt like a promise older than time itself. He held out his hand. “Are you ready?” “No,” she said truthfully. “But I’m going anyway.” Her fingers curled around his. Together, they stepped into the water. The world tilted. Light exploded outward like a thousand petals. A wind with no source tore through the clearing. Elara felt herself lifted, weightless and burning, like a seed caught in the moon’s breath. When the light faded, the world was different. She stood in a forest made of silver bark and glowing moss. The stars above were wrong—too many, too bright. The air shimmered with unseen music. They had crossed into Faerie. And there was no going back.
