CHAPTER TWO—THE CONSEQUENCES Hailey didn’t stop walking until her legs started burning. The city blurred past her —car horns, morning chatter, street vendors calling out — but none of it felt real. Everything sounded muffled, like she was underwater. Her mind kept replaying the same terrifying loop. It happened. I slept with a stranger. I don’t even know his name. Her chest tightened. “Get it together, Hailey,” she whispered to herself. “Crying in public is not the vibe.” But wow — the urge was strong. She reached the penthouse building she still technically shared with Kendrick, her now ex-fiancé. The glass doors reflected her back at her like a cruel mirror. Rumpled dress. Smudged makeup. Tiara still pinned in her hair like some tragic joke. She looked like heartbreak in human form. She walked inside anyway. Because hiding wasn’t an option anymore. THE AMBUSH The moment she stepped into the living room, she knew something was wrong. Too quiet. Too staged. Too many people. Her stepmother Vivian sat on the couch like royalty, legs crossed, expression sharp and smug. Her father Troy stood by the window, arms folded. And then Tessa. Kendrick. Side by side. Acting worried. Hailey felt something inside her go cold. Tessa rushed toward her, voice overly sweet. “Hailey! Oh my God, thank goodness you’re okay! We were so worried about you!” Worried. Right. Kendrick frowned dramatically. “Babe, where did you go last night? You disappeared. You look… rough.” Hailey stared at them. Really stared. And for the first time in her life, she saw it clearly. The lies. The acting. The betrayal. The performance. Her voice came out calm too calm. “Dad,” she said quietly, “Tessa and Kendrick are sleeping together.” The room froze. Dead silent. Tessa’s face drained of color. Kendrick stiffened. Vivian raised a brow like she was watching entertainment. Troy turned sharply. “What nonsense are you talking about?” Hailey exhaled slowly. “I heard them. Last night. Before I left.” Kendrick scoffed, defensive. “Hailey, come on” Tessa’s voice trembled. “She’s emotional. She’s clearly not in her right mind” But Hailey cut in, sharper now. “Don’t gaslight me. I heard everything.” Their silence confirmed it. Her chest didn’t explode the way she expected. It just… hardened. Like heartbreak had already burned itself out. THE REAL ATTACK Vivian leaned forward, lips curling into a slow, cruel smile. “Well,” she said sweetly, “since we’re exposing secrets…” Hailey’s stomach twisted. Vivian tilted her head. “Should we talk about your night?” The room shifted. Hailey’s heart skipped. Vivian continued smoothly, “You stormed out of your engagement party… got drunk… and went home with some old man.” Hailey’s blood ran cold. Vivian smirked. “I followed you to that rooftop bar. I saw everything.” Tessa gasped fake shock. Kendrick looked stunned or pretending to be. Vivian tapped her phone. “I even paid him to teach you a lesson. I have photos, too.” Hailey froze. Her brain screamed. She… what? Vivian thought she had ruined her. But what she didn’t know? The stranger hadn’t hurt Hailey. He had protected her. Still, the words felt like knives. Kendrick looked at Hailey sharply. “Is that true?” Troy’s face darkened with disgust. “You’ve finally disgraced this family. Just like your mother. Shameless.” Something snapped. Hailey lifted her chin, eyes burning. “Don’t ever talk about my mother like that. You never deserved her. None of you did.” Troy stepped forward, enraged. “How dare you” The slap came fast. Sharp. Loud. Brutal. Her head snapped sideways. The room went dead silent. Hailey tasted blood. But instead of crying… She straightened. Slowly. And smiled. Not sweet. Not soft. Broken. Cold. Dangerous. “So this is family,” she said quietly. “Interesting.” MEANWHILE — KIERAN Across the city, Kieran Blackwood stood in his penthouse office, staring at the skyline. His assistant entered nervously. “We’re still tracking her identity, sir.” Kieran’s jaw tightened slightly. He remembered the girl’s voice. The way she flinched. The way she whispered like she didn’t believe she deserved kindness. “She wasn’t supposed to be there,” he muttered. His assistant hesitated. “We also confirmed something else…” Kieran turned. “Say it.” “She was a virgin.” Silence dropped. Kieran went still. A slow, dark realization crossed his face. “So she wasn’t the girl that was sent,” he said coldly. “No, sir.” Kieran’s expression hardened. “Then someone set her up.” BACK TO HAILEY Hailey walked out of the penthouse an hour later. No fiancé. No family. No safety net. Just her purse. Her pride. And a heart that refused to stay broken. Her phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number. Unknown: You think you can disappear? Cute. Another text. You owe us. Her chest tightened. Then another buzz. A different number. Unknown: Hailey Rivers. We need to talk. It’s about that night. Her breath caught. Her fingers trembled. Who is this…? She stared at the screen as the city rushed around her, unaware her entire world was shifting again. She had no idea the stranger from that night was already searching for her. No idea their paths were about to collide. And no idea… That the man who accidentally became her first would soon become the most dangerous part of him
