CHAPTER THREE—THE REUNION

Hailey almost didn’t answer the call. Her phone buzzed in her palm, and for a second, it felt heavier than it should. Like picking it up would reopen a door she had duct-taped shut in her mind. That night. The stranger. The mistake she never talked about. Her thumb hovered. Don’t be dramatic, she told herself. It’s just a call. Still… her heart was doing backflips. She answered. “Hello?” A short pause. Then that voice — calm, low, familiar in a way that made her chest tighten. “It’s Kieran,” he said. “The man you left behind.” Her stomach flipped. Of course, he remembered. “So… you tracked me down,” she muttered, trying to sound chill when her nerves were lowkey spiraling. “I didn’t expect to,” he replied. “But once I realized what happened that night… I couldn’t let it go.” “… Why?” she asked quietly. “Because,” he said, slower now, “you were never supposed to be in that room.” That sentence landed harder than she expected. “… What do you mean?” “I’ll explain in person,” he said. “Public place. No pressure. If you don’t want to come, I’ll understand.” She hesitated. Then they sighed. “Send the address.” THE MEETING Two hours later, Hailey sat in a small downtown café, tucked into a corner seat like she was bracing for impact. Her coffee sat untouched. Her knee bounced under the table. Girl, relax. You survived betrayal, family drama, emotional trauma… one man won’t end you. The bell above the café door chimed. Her spine stiffened. She looked up. Kieran walked in like he carried a storm with him — composed, sharp, dark jacket, unreadable expression. Not flashy. Not loud. Just… controlled. He spotted her instantly. Of course, he did. He walked over and pulled out the chair across from her. “Hailey.” She lifted her chin. “Kieran.” A beat of silence. Then she muttered, “You know I ran because I was embarrassed, right?” A faint smirk touched his lips. “I assumed.” “Yeah,” she sighed. “Not my proudest era.” He studied her more seriously now. “You looked terrified that morning,” he said. “Not reckless. Not calculated. Just… hurt.” That caught her off guard. “… You noticed?” He nodded once. THE CONFESSION Kieran leaned forward slightly. “There was supposed to be someone else in that room,” he admitted. Hailey froze. “… Someone else?” “Yes,” he said. “A woman my assistant hired. A companion. A setup.” Hailey’s stomach twisted. “So you thought I was—” “I did,” he admitted honestly. “At first.” Her chest tightened with a mix of embarrassment and irritation. “But then I realized you weren’t pretending,” he added quickly. “You were shaken. You looked like your world had just collapsed.” She looked away. “I didn’t plan any of it,” she murmured. “I know,” he said quietly. “That’s why I’m here.” She frowned. “Here for what?” His jaw tightened slightly. “To figure out how you ended up there instead of the person who was hired.” THE UNEXPECTED TWIST Hailey hesitated… then spoke. “My stepmother followed me that night,” she said softly. “She wanted to humiliate me. Makes me look bad. Ruin my reputation.” Kieran’s expression darkened. “Did she know about the hotel?” “I don’t know,” Hailey admitted. “But she wanted me drunk, disoriented, vulnerable.” Kieran leaned back slowly. “That means…” he muttered. She blinked. “Means what?” He met her gaze. “Two different people planned two different things that night.” Her heart stuttered. “… You’re saying I got caught between two schemes?” He nodded. “And neither of us was supposed to meet each other.” A cold realization crept over her. “So this wasn’t fate,” she whispered. “It was a mistake,” he replied. “A dangerous one.” She studied him more carefully. “You still haven’t explained how you found me,” she said. He exhaled quietly. “I didn’t want to drop this like a bomb,” he said. “But you deserve honesty.” Then, calmly: “Kieran Blackwood. CEO of the Blackwood Group.” Her eyes widened. “… You’re joking.” “I’m not.” She let out a stunned, breathless laugh. “Wow. Okay. So my accidental one-night trauma comes with a billionaire DLC pack. Love that.” He almost smiled. Almost. His tone turned serious again. “Hailey… if two different parties manipulated that night, it meant someone powerful wanted control of a situation involving me.” Her stomach sank. “… So I wasn’t just collateral damage.” “No,” he said firmly. “You were the wrong person in the wrong plan.” She whispered, half to herself, “Story of my life.” Just as she reached for her coffee, a glass shattered somewhere across the café. Everyone flinched. A barista apologized. Nervous laughter followed. But Hailey felt it. That strange chill. She glanced toward the window. Outside, a sleek black car idled longer than necessary. The driver didn’t move. Didn’t look away. Kieran noticed too. His posture shifted — alert, controlled. “We’re being watched,” she muttered. “Not by your family,” he said quietly. Her chest tightened. “… Then by whom?” Before he could answer, his phone buzzed. He checked it. His expression hardened. “They found out I contacted you,” he said. Her heart dropped. “Who?” He met her gaze. “My board.”
