Episode 1 (Updated): The Shattered Friend The afternoon heat was heavy on the Central Campus lawn. Students moved in small groups between lecture halls, their laughter drifting through the air. Sitting on a wooden bench under the shade of a neem tree, Jake kept his head down, focused on a second-hand notebook. Jake was not the kind of guy people noticed. He wore simple, faded shirts, kept his hair trimmed short, and spoke only when spoken to. He came from a humble home in a small town where money was tight, and coming to university on a scholarship was his only ticket to a better life. Back in high school, he was so shy that he could barely look a girl in the eye without his palms sweating. "Jake! Hey, Jake!" Jake looked up. His best friend, Mateo, was jogging across the grass toward him. Mateo was usually the opposite of Jake—outgoing, cheerful, and always wearing a bright smile. But today, Mateo’s face was pale, and his hands were shaking. "Mateo? What’s wrong?" Jake asked, setting his pen down. Mateo slumped onto the bench, staring blankly at the ground. "It’s Svetlana. She... she did it again." "Did what?" "I caught her outside the student center with Viktor, that final-year guy in engineering," Mateo said, his voice cracking. "When I asked her about it, she just laughed in my face. She told me I was too soft. She said she was only using me to buy her books and pay for her meals." Jake felt a tight knot form in his chest. For the past six months, he had watched Mateo spend every bit of money he had buying gifts for Svetlana, doing her class assignments, and walking her home every night. Mateo had loved her with everything he had. "She called me a nobody," Mateo whispered, covering his eyes as tears spilled over his fingers. "In front of Viktor and all his friends, Jake. Everyone was laughing." Jake sat in silence, watching his best friend break down. A cold, unfamiliar anger began to burn deep inside him. He looked around the crowded campus square. He saw girls walking in groups, giggling, scrolling through their phones, completely unaware of the pain Mateo was feeling. Why do good guys always get destroyed? Jake thought to himself. Because we show our heart. Because we care too much. That evening, inside their cramped hostel room, Mateo lay on his mattress with his face to the wall, refusing to eat. Jake stood by the window, watching the rain start to fall against the glass. His roommate, Kenji, walked in with Liam, tossing their keys on the table. "He's still crying over Svetlana?" Kenji asked. "She broke him," Jake said quietly. "That's how it goes," Liam shrugged, grabbing a bottle of water. "If you act too nice, they walk all over you. You have to play the game before they play you." Jake turned around. "Then I’m going to learn how to play." Kenji stopped drinking and laughed. "You? Jake, you can’t even ask a girl for directions without stuttering." "Watch me," Jake said, his voice completely flat. The shy boy from the village was gone. "From today, no girl gets to hurt my feelings. I’m going to give them back every piece of pain they give to guys like Mateo." Kenji and Liam exchanged glances as the smile faded from Kenji's face. "Careful, man," Liam said softly. "That’s a dangerous path." "No," Jake replied, looking at his reflection in the dark window pane. "It’s the only way."
