CHAPTER ELEVEN Elizabeth woke up with butterflies flapping incessantly in the pits of her stomach. Today was the day she was supposed to move in with Jason, she hadn’t even packed. Mara was supposed to help her with packing after her working hours and she was supposed to inform her boss at the convenience store and officially resign. Officially because she had not gone there in some days and she was sure her space had already been filled but it was important she cut all ties to avoid suspicions from them and to also give her a good credit score when she decides to apply for a job again after this whole thing was over, although she doubted she would have to work in a convenience store again after getting paid by Jason. Elizabeth walked around quietly, she did not want to wake her brother who had stayed up all night and she most definitely did not want to disturb her mother’s sleep. Her sickness was getting worse and she was always in pains anytime she wasn’t sleeping. Elizabeth had plans to ask Jason tonight to hurry up her mother’s treatment before it worsened to the point where it would be untreatable. “Liz…” her mother called in a very grainy voice just as she was about to walk past her room. “Mother, you are awake… how are you feeling this morning.” “My back hurts and my eyes, my head feels like a nail was hammered into it.” Her mother groaned trying to move. “You will feel better soon, I promise.” She told her, her mind firmly set on the task at hand…being a surrogate and helping her family. She stayed with her mother until she fell asleep again and then took her bath and headed to work. “Good morning” The boss’ son greeted immediately she entered, smiling brightly. He had always had a thing for her since she started working there and although she had rejected him over and over again, he still was trying. “Good morning Thomas” Elizabeth smiled back. “We haven’t seen you around these days, what happened?” “I have been sick” Elizabeth lied… “is your father around, I would very much like to speak with him.” “He’s out back and has been expecting you.” Thomas replied. Elizabeth had to go around to where he was and past him to get to the back, she tried to prevent any contact with him but it was highly impossible with how small the space behind the counter was. Her shoulder brushed his back as she walked past him and then she heard his groan. Elizabeth’s skin crawled at the sound, but she did not bother turning back and just walked straight out back resisting the urge to scrub her shoulder clean. “Good morning boss” she greeted upon entry. “Elizabeth, sit down. I am sure you have a valid explanation for not coming to work these past few days.” “I am so sorry sir, I have had a very eventful last couple of days but I am here to resign.” “I see, if I may ask why you want to resign. You are my best employee and if it is about the pay, I could give you a raise.” “It is not about a raise, sir although I really appreciate this. It is my mother, she has cancer and I would like to resign to take proper care to her.” There was pity in his eyes as he looked at her and Elizabeth knew that he was going to allow her resign without a fuss. She had been worried he would ask for some days notice before properly relieving her of her duties with him. “I wish you well.” He said, accepting the resignation letter she had on the table. Elizabeth thanked him profusely and walked out of the office, her mind elated and free. Thomas was not behind the counter much to her delight, she could walk freely without having to brush up against him and without his groan following her like a bad dream. She walked out of the store and into the glaring sun, shielding her eyes, she surveyed the road. “Liz, wait!” Someone called from behind her. Elizabeth turned and saw Thomas hurrying towards her with something in his hand, she could not act like she had not heard him and cross the road now that he was so close and so she waited. “You are leaving?” He said when he caught up with her. “Yes, I have other things to do for my family.” She replied vaguely. “And here I was really hoping we could, you know” “I already told you times without number, nothing can ever go on between us and besides I would not fraternize with my boss’ son.” “What about now? You no longer work for us so that cannot be fraternizing.” He said grabbing her by the arm. Elizabeth was terrified even though she knew he could hardly harm her right there in the middle of the road. “I’m sorry Thomas, I really do not f**k with you in that way.” She said gently. His hand tightened around her arm and Elizabeth winced trying gently to free herself. “You are a motherfucking slut, tempting me all this while and then going away like I mean nothing to you?” “You mean nothing to me! I think I have made that clear more often than not.” Elizabeth answered, eyeing him warily. “That’s a lie, you are f*****g lying and I am going to prove it.” “Let go of me or I will scream.” Elizabeth glanced around and much to her dismay, nobody was reading any meaning to their conversation. “I said let go of me!” She said louder trying to draw anyone’s attention. “You heard the lady” a masculine voice called out from behind her. Elizabeth could recognize that voice anywhere, much to her chagrin. It was Jason! “Who the f**k are you butting into a conversation between my girl and I.” Thomas asked, although he loosened his grip on her arm, he did not let go of her completely. “I am not your girl.” Elizabeth muttered “If you do not let go of her arm right this minute, I will make sure you do not have hands to grab ladies with.” Elizabeth watched the altercation with parted lips, staring at the absolutely gorgeous man in front of her. He was wearing jeans again, her weakness and she could not stop her eyes from accessing his body, remembering how she had seen him shirtless. Thomas hand fell away from her arm, Elizabeth rubbed the spot gently and then before her very eyes, Jason landed a punch in his face. Elizabeth gasped as Thomas doubled over “That is for making me repeat myself, come on Elizabeth, I will take you home.” He said and held out his hand, waiting for her to take it, his blue eyes twinkling. Elizabeth put her hand in his and like one entranced allowed herself to be led away without sparing a glance at Thomas. When they were in the car and driving away she decided to ask him what he was doing around the store. “I was passing by” he said simply. “You just happened to be passing by my store.” “Okay, fine. I went over to your house and met your brother who said I would find you here.” “How do you know my house? Have you been following me?” Elizabeth asked, her face growing hot. “Give me some credit, Elizabeth. No I have not been following you, I just wanted to check up and make sure you haven’t changed your mind.” “I already signed the contract” Elizabeth stated “I know” he said and did not say more. They drove to her house in silence and Elizabeth was left to ruminate on what he had said, she turned to watch his features as he drove and wasn’t shy when he glanced her way. “You are staring” he said smiling “Sorry” Elizabeth replied smugly. They both knew she wasn’t sorry one bit.
