TWELVE

CHAPTER TWELVE

“Thank you for dropping me.” Elizabeth said as she got down from Jason’s car. They had sat in awkward silence, the air sexually charged between them after her brazen attempt at watching him.

“Do you want to come in?” She asked, mentally hitting herself on the head for even suggesting such a thing, why would he want to come into her house.

“I would love to” Jason responded, his lips curling up in a smile.

He and Elizabeth walked over to the door, she took a deep breath and knocked, knowing that the sight of Jason was going to knock the socks off Mara.

“Great, you are back.. I am going to kick Darren’s…” Mara’s voice trailed off at the sight of Jason.

“Mara, meet Jason Rodrigues and Jason, this is my best friend Mara.” Elizabeth said quickly.

“Hello Mara, it is nice to meet you.” Jason said stretching out a hand

“And you” Mara responded, opening the door wider so they could both come in and all the while maintaining eye contact with Elizabeth as if to ask her what the f**k she was doing.

Jason entered the house, it was beautiful in that homely way and he could immediately imagine how cozy the family who lived here must be.

“Hey, you came back.” Darren gushed, shifting so Jason sat with him on the couch.

“What can I get you?” Elizabeth asked him, fiddling with her fingers.

“Water is fine, thank you” he smiled at her.

Mara followed her out and into the kitchen before she finally spoke.

“What the f**k do you think you are doing, Liz?”

“I know, it’s crazy and it already came out of my mouth and I could not take it back.” Elizabeth wailed.

“Well, what are you waiting for? Go out there and cater to your guest.”

Elizabeth took a glass of water and went back into the sitting room. She could see that she was hardly needed because Jason and Darren were bonding quite alright, she had no idea what they were talking about.

“I see you both have gotten along quite well.” Elizabeth commented as she offered Jason the glass.

He muttered a thank you, his hand brushing hers briefly as he took the glass from her, warmth flooded Elizabeth’s veins and she stepped back, nearly tripping.

Jason was half way up before he even realized it

“Are you okay?” He asked

“I’m fine, thank you. I…errr… I have to pack.” She muttered and dashed out before she made a total fool of herself.

Jason watched her leave, something had spooked her and he could only guess that it was him, he smiled and faced her brother Darren, he liked the guy.

“Are you okay?” Mara asked her friend quietly as they both packed.

“I don’t know how I am feeling right now, I mean… this is all new today and I have been so confident about it but right now, I don’t know, Mar.”

“You will be alright, Liz. You have always been the strongest person I know and you might be feeling down right now but never forget why you are doing this.” Mara reassured her.

“Please take care of Darren for me”

“I will, I promise. You just have to focus on what you have to do.”

It took some minutes to pack and extra to say goodbye to her mother who was still sleeping. Finally Elizabeth was ready to go, she hugged Mara for a long time and turned to her brother.

“He will take care of you.” He smiled but his smile was wobbly.

“I know he will. Mara will take care of you too.”

“Urghhh, she is not my baby sitter though.” He scoffed, rolling his eyes.

“That is exactly what I am.” Mara interjected, eyeing him.

Elizabeth smiled fondly at the bickering duo with Jason watching from the sidelines.

“Are you ready?” He asked

“I am” Elizabeth said firmly.

She walked over to the car, dumped her bags in the boot, waved one last time and climbed in before she changed her mind and canceled everything.

“Seatbelt” Jason said softly.

He could see how shaken she was and he could not blame her.
