CHAPTER FIVE

808 Words
As they drove home, the tension between them was palpable. Ava felt a sense of anticipation building inside her, and she knew she couldn't keep quiet any longer. "Why did you do that?" she asked, her voice low and challenging. Julian's eyes flickered to hers, his expression unreadable. "Do what?" he asked, his voice smooth, his tone dripping with innocence. Ava's gaze held his, her eyes flashing with annoyance. "You know exactly what I'm talking about," she said, her voice firm. "Don't play dumb with me. You pulled me close and claimed me as your wife in front of Rachel. What was that about?" Julian's expression didn't change, but Ava detected a hint of amusement in his eyes. "I was simply staking my claim," he said, his voice low and husky. "Making it clear to Rachel and everyone else that you're off-limits." Ava's heart skipped a beat at his words. "Why does it matter?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Julian's gaze locked onto hers, his eyes burning with intensity. "Because you're mine now, Ava," he said, his voice low and possessive. "At least, in the eyes of the world, you are. And I'll do whatever it takes to protect that." The air between them seemed to vibrate with tension, and Ava wondered what would happen next. Would Julian back down, or would he push her further? The game between them was escalating, and Ava was ready to play. -------- As the days went by, Ava settled into her new role as Julian's wife, playing the part of the dutiful spouse in their contractual marriage. She attended social events and functions with Julian by her side, smiling and laughing like a perfect couple. But behind closed doors, she felt like a prisoner, trapped in a life that wasn't hers. Ava's days were filled with the monotony of her new routine. She would wake up early, get dressed, and head downstairs to the dining room for breakfast. Julian would already be there, sipping his coffee and reading the newspaper. They would exchange pleasantries, but the conversation was always stilted. After breakfast, Ava would spend her time reading, watching TV, or taking long walks around the city. She felt like she was losing herself in the process, like she was disappearing into the role of Julian's wife. One day, as Ava was browsing through a bookstore, she stumbled upon a novel that caught her eye. It was a romance novel, and the story was about a couple who fell deeply in love. Ava felt a pang of wistfulness as she read the blurb. She thought about her own relationship with Ethan, the love they shared, and how it was real and true. But she couldn't help but feel a sense of longing for the kind of romance and passion she read about in the novel. As she continued to read the novel, Ava found herself getting lost in the story. She forgot about her troubles, her contractual marriage, and her role as Julian's wife. She was transported to a world where love was real, and people were happy. But as she closed the book, reality hit her hard. She wasn't living in a novel, and her marriage was just a contract, a business arrangement between two people who didn't love each other. Ava sighed, feeling a sense of despair wash over her. She didn't know how much longer she could keep up this charade. She needed to find a way to make her life work, or at least find a way to survive it. As she walked back to the mansion, Ava made a decision. She would try to make the most of her situation, even if it meant pretending to be something she's not. She would play the role of Julian's wife, and maybe, just maybe, she would find a way to make it work. But little did Ava know, her life was about to take a dramatic turn. Julian had secrets, secrets that would change everything. And Ava was about to discover them, whether she liked it or not. As Ava entered the mansion, she noticed Julian standing in the living room, staring out the window. He seemed lost in thought, and Ava wondered what was on his mind. "Julian?" Ava said, breaking the silence. Julian turned to her, his expression unreadable. "Ava," he replied, his voice neutral. "I've been thinking about our arrangement, and I believe it's time we discussed the details." Ava's heart skipped a beat. What did he want to discuss? Was he going to change the terms of their contract? "What details?" Ava asked, her voice cautious. Julian's gaze locked onto hers, his eyes piercing. "I'll tell you soon enough," he said, his voice low. "But for now, let's just say that our arrangement is about to get a lot more interesting."
