In afternoon, the doctor entered the hospital room with a reassuring smile. “Good news,” he announced. “Kai, you’re well enough to leave today. Just take it easy for a while.”
Kai nodded, feeling relief wash over him. Liam and Ethan exchanged grateful glances, their concern easing.
After finalizing the paperwork, they gathered Kai’s belongings and helped him into a taxi. The ride was quiet but filled with a sense of camaraderie.
Arriving at Kai’s room, Ethan gave a nod. “I’ll leave you guys here. Call if you need anything,” he said, his tough exterior softening with genuine care.
Kai watched Ethan go, feeling the strength of their friendship. Turning to Liam, he said, “Thanks for everything, man. It means a lot.”
Liam grinned, “Anytime. Let’s get you settled.”
-----------
Once inside, Liam looked around, intrigued. “Mind if I check out your room?” he asked.
Kai shrugged, smiling. “Go ahead.”
Liam wandered over to the shelves, eyeing the rows of books. “You’ve got quite the collection,” he noted, picking up a novel. As he did, a photo slipped from between the pages and fell to the floor.
He bent down to retrieve it, finding a picture of Kai with his family. “Is this your family?” Liam asked gently, handing it to Kai.
Kai nodded, his expression softening. “Yeah, that was taken a few years ago. We moved around a lot because of my parents' jobs.”
Liam studied the photo. “Must’ve been tough, all that moving.”
“It was,” Kai admitted, “but it also taught me to adapt. Still, I miss having a stable place.”
Liam placed the book back. “Do you keep in touch with them?”
“Not as much as I’d like,” Kai said, a hint of sadness in his voice. “I’ve been trying to change that. They’re always busy, and I guess I got used to handling things alone.”
Liam nodded, understanding. “I get it. But you’re not alone now. Ethan and I are here, too.”
Kai smiled, feeling the sincerity in Liam’s words. “Thanks, Liam. It means a lot. I never really had friends I could count on like this.”
Liam grinned. “We’re your team now. Anything you need, just say the word.”
Kai felt a warmth spreading through him, grateful for the unexpected support and camaraderie.
“Maybe we can visit your family together sometime,” Liam suggested. “I’d love to meet them.”
Kai considered it, the idea planting a seed of hope. “I’d like that. It’s time I reconnect.”
The two friends shared a moment of understanding, their bond stronger than ever.
-----------
After a few moments of silence, Kai looked at Liam and said, "I want to go outside for a bit."
Liam nodded. “Sure, let’s get some fresh air.”
They left the room and started walking down the road, the morning sun casting a warm glow over the city. The streets were relatively quiet, the bustle of the day just beginning. Kai walked slowly, still mindful of his injuries, but appreciating the sense of freedom.
As they walked, Liam glanced over at Kai. “You seem lost in thought.”
Kai sighed. “Yeah, just thinking about the past. There’s a lot I haven’t told you guys.”
Liam gave him an encouraging look. “I’m here to listen. Whatever you want to share, I’m all ears.”
Kai took a deep breath, feeling the weight of his past pressing down. “My family moved around a lot because of my parents’ jobs. I was always the new kid, trying to fit in. It was tough, you know? I never stayed in one place long enough to make real friends.”
Liam nodded, understanding. “That must have been hard. Constantly starting over.”
“It was,” Kai continued. “But it wasn’t just the moving. There were some bad experiences too. I got into trouble a few times. Hung out with the wrong crowd, got into fights. I think that’s why I’m so guarded now. It’s hard to trust people when you’ve been burned before.”
Liam looked thoughtful. “I get it. It’s hard to let people in after you’ve been hurt. But you’ve got us now. Ethan and I, we’re not going anywhere.”
Kai smiled, appreciating Liam’s words. “Thanks, Liam. It means a lot. I’m trying to be more open, to trust more. It’s just...a work in progress.”
“That’s all any of us can do,” Liam said, patting Kai on the back. “We’re all a work in progress. And we’re here to help each other along the way.”
They continued walking, the conversation helping Kai feel lighter. The sun climbed higher in the sky, and Kai felt a renewed sense of hope and determination. With friends like Liam and Ethan by his side, he knew he could face whatever came next.
----------
As Kai and Liam walked, the soothing rhythm of their conversation was interrupted by the sight of Ethan approaching from the opposite direction. He was walking briskly, a determined look on his face.
“Hey, guys!” Ethan called out as he neared them.
Kai and Liam greeted him, and Ethan, without hesitation, pulled them into a warm, friendly hug. “Thought I’d catch up with you two,” he said with a grin.
Kai noticed Ethan’s hand as they pulled away. There were a few small scratches on his knuckles. “Hey, what’s with the scratches?” Kai asked, his voice laced with concern.
Ethan shrugged nonchalantly. “Oh, it’s nothing.”
“Seriously?” Kai pressed, studying the marks. “Did you get into a fight?”
Ethan’s expression shifted slightly, but he maintained his casual demeanor. “No, it’s nothing.”
Liam stepped in, his voice carrying a hint of frustration. “Ethan, don’t hide it. You had a run-in with those bad boys who hurt Kai, didn’t you?”
Ethan simply smiled, the corners of his mouth turning up in a smirk. “Whatever.”
Kai looked between them, the realization dawning on him. “You really did go after them, didn’t you?”
Ethan shrugged again, his smile remaining. “Just had to settle a few things. But it’s over now.”
Kai felt a mix of relief and frustration. “You didn’t have to do that, you know.”
Ethan’s grin widened. “I know. But sometimes you need to stand up for your friends. Besides, it’s what friends do.”
Liam nodded in agreement. “We look out for each other. That’s what matters.”
Kai’s heart swelled with appreciation for his friends. Despite the rough exterior, Ethan’s actions spoke volumes about his loyalty. “Thanks, Ethan. I really mean it.”
Ethan simply nodded, his smile softening. “Anytime. Now, let’s get back and enjoy the day.”
As they walked together, the three friends shared a newfound sense of unity and understanding, the bond between them growing stronger with each step.
.............As they approached the hostel, the sound of laughter and conversation filled the air. The group had been enjoying a light-hearted moment, but that changed when a sleek, luxury car rolled up to the entrance. The vehicle’s polished exterior gleamed in the sunlight, and its high-end features were a stark contrast to the modest hostel.
A suited man stepped out of the car, his attire immaculate and his demeanor authoritative. Ethan’s laughter abruptly halted as he noticed the man. His expression shifted from casual to tense.
Kai and Liam, still chuckling from their earlier conversation, noticed Ethan’s sudden change in demeanor. “What’s wrong?” Kai asked, puzzled.
Ethan tried to play it cool, but his unease was evident. “Nothing,” he said curtly. “You guys should head inside. I need to take care of something.”
Liam looked concerned but didn’t push further. He and Kai entered the hostel, leaving Ethan alone with the suited man.
Ethan approached the man with a strained expression. “What are you doing here?” he demanded. “Are you here to laugh at me for living in this hostel?”
The man, clearly Ethan’s father, raised an eyebrow. “It’s your choice, Ethan. If you prefer this hostel over a life of luxury, that’s on you.”
Ethan’s face reddened with frustration. “I chose this hostel over your luxury life because I wanted to make my own decisions. I didn’t want to be suffocated by your expectations.”
The man’s eyes narrowed. “Remember, I’m your father. Call me ‘Dad,’ .”
Ethan’s frustration boiled over. “Why should I? You don’t even respect my choices! I’ve had enough of this.”
“Ethan,” the man said, his tone stern, “you need to understand the value of the opportunities you’re throwing away.”
Ethan’s voice was filled with anger. “Opportunities? I’m making my own path. You’re the one who doesn’t get it.”
The argument continued, the air between them crackling with tension. As the conversation reached its peak, Ethan’s anger reached its limit. “You know what? Just go to hell!” he shouted before storming off, leaving his father standing at the entrance.
The suited man watched Ethan leave, a look of disappointment and frustration on his face. Ethan’s departure was a clear statement of his rejection of his father’s attempts to control his life.
As Ethan re-entered the hostel, his expression was a mix of anger and relief. The encounter had been draining, but he was resolute in his decision to live life on his own terms.
