Chapter 49

1021 Words

MAETHYS POV The logic settles before the fear does. “So…” My voice sounds thin, like it doesn’t quite belong to me. “I’m a wolf and a… witch?” The words hang there. There’s no one to correct me. No sharp denial. No laughter. Just a quiet, heavy stillness that presses in from all sides like the room itself has decided to listen. And that’s when it clicks. Not all at once. Not cleanly. More like pieces snapping together with a force that makes my chest ache. The man who attacked Heather. The way he’d looked at me. How he had moved without me touching him. The force that he had hit the wall with. My stomach twists. Could I be— My fingers curl before I can stop them, finger nails digging into my skin. My breath stutters, coming too fast, too shallow. The room feels smaller. Closer.
