Ariana Benson had been to many places in California.
Hospitals that smelled like bleach and despair, markets that never slept, small offices where people looked through her like she didn’t exist.
But nothing, definitely nothing prepared her for Blackwood Enterprises.
The building rose into the sky like it had no intention of ever touching the ground.
It was full of glass, steel and silence.
Everything about it screamed money and everything about Ariana screamed the opposite.
She adjusted her faded dress for the third time, even though she knew it wouldn’t help.
It was the only decent thing she had left.
Ava’s hospital bracelet still rested in her bag.
A reminder, a burden and a reason.
Ariana stepped into the lobby. Then the air changed immediately.
It was cooler, cleaner and heavier.
People turned their heads as she entered.
Not in curiosity but in judgment.
Whispers started almost immediately.
“She looks lost.”
“Did she come for cleaning work?”
“Security should check her.”
Ariana swallowed hard and walked to the reception desk.
“I am here for an interview,” she said quietly. The receptionist looked her up and down slowly.
She looked at her with no smile and no warmth, she looked with just calculation.
“Name?”
“Ariana Benson.”
A pause, then a raised eyebrow.
“Wait here.”
Minutes stretched and Ariana’s hands wouldn’t stop shaking.
Not from fear alone but from exhaustion from everything she had carried alone for too long.
Then, the elevator doors opened and the entire atmosphere shifted.
He stepped out.
Ethan Blackwood.
Ariana felt it before she saw him properly because there was an usual silence.
That was what followed him.
Not respect or admiration, just silence.
He walked like the world had agreed not to interrupt him.
He was wearing a black suit and had the perfect posture. His eyes were not looking soft at all and when those eyes landed on her, Ariana forgot how to breathe.
Ethan stopped, just one step away from her. He looked at her like she was a problem he hadn’t decided to solve yet.
“So,” he said finally. “You are the candidate.”
Ariana blinked.
Candidate?
“I… I am here for a job,” she said quickly.
Ethan tilted his head slightly. He was observing and measuring her.
“Interesting.”
The word felt wrong coming from him.
It sounded cold and detached.
Like she was a document, not a person.
“Come,” he said simply.
Ariana hesitated.
“Where?” His eyes flicked to her face again.
“You don’t ask questions in my building.”
That shut her up immediately.
She followed because she had no choice.
The elevator ride was silent, too silent.
Ariana could feel her heartbeat in her throat.
Ethan didn’t look at her once but she could feel him anyway. He felt like pressure and gravity.
When the doors opened, she was led into a massive office with glass walls and a beautiful scene of city view. A desk that looked like it belonged to power itself.
Ethan sat while riana stood. That alone made her feel smaller than she had ever felt in her life.
He opened a file but he didn’t look up.
“Tell me why you want this job.” Ariana’s throat tightened.
“I need money,” she said honestly.
Ethan paused, looked up and finally, something flickered in his eyes.
It was not emotion, it was interest.
“You are direct.” He said as he tried to sound as formal as he could sound.
“I don’t have time to lie,” she said quietly.
There was a beat of silence.
Then Ethan leaned back slightly.
“That’s good,” he said.
Ariana frowned slightly.
“Good?”
“Yes.”
He closed the file.
And what he said next changed everything.
“Then I have something better than a job.”
Ariana blinked.
“I’m sorry?”
Ethan stood slowly and walked toward her.
He made sure was ach step is deliberate and controlled.
Until he stopped right in front of her.
Close enough that she could smell his cologne.
It smelled cold, expensive and unforgiving.
“Marriage,” he said.
Silence filled the room.
Ariana stared at him like she didn’t understand English anymore.
“I...what?”
Ethan didn’t blink.
“I need a wife. You need money. It solves both problems.”
Ariana laughed weirdly out of shock.
“That is insane.”
“No,” he said calmly. “It ia efficient.”
Her heart started racing faster.
“This is a joke.”
“It isn’t.”
Ariana stepped back immediately.
“You don’t even know me.”
Ethan’s eyes darkened slightly.
“That is the point.”
Silence fell again.
Now, it felt heavy, uncomfortable and dangerous.
Then he turned and walked back to his desk, opened the drawer, pulled out a document and placed it on the table.
A contract.
“I don’t repeat myself,” he said.
Ariana didn’t move.
Her mind was spinning.
Marriage? A stranger? This man? How would this work out?
“No love,” Ethan added. “No attachment. No interference in my life.”
A pause.
“One year. Ten million.”
Ariana froze.
Ten million!
This could pay for Ava’s hospital bills, rent, food, school, survival and more.
It could fund everything she had ever needed.
Her fingers tightened.
“No,” she whispered.
Ethan looked at her again. “Excuse me?”
Ariana swallowed hard. “I said no.”
For the first time, something shifted in his expression.
Not anger, not surprise but interest.
Like she had just done something no one else ever did.
She refused him.
He stood again, walked closer but slower this time.
Until he was directly in front of her again.
“You are lying,” he said softly.
Ariana’s breath caught. “I’m not.”
Ethan studied her face.
It looked long and quiet.
Then, he pushed the contract slightly forward.
“Read it properly,” he said.
Ariana hesitated.
But slowly, she looked down.
Her eyes scanned the pages.
And then, she saw it.
She saw the clause.
Her breathing stopped.
Clause 7: Immediate relocation to Ethan Blackwood’s residence upon signing.
Her hand trembled slightly.
Ava. Hospital. Debt. Eviction.
Everything collided at once.
Ethan watched her carefully.
Waiting. Measuring and then, Ariana closed her eyes.
For the first time in her life, she made a decision she didn’t want to make but had to.
She picked up the pen and signed.
Ethan’s eyes narrowed slightly.
Not in satisfaction but in something closer to curiosity.
Like he still didn’t understand her.
When she finished, she placed the pen down.
Her voice was barely steady.
“I hope this doesn’t destroy my life,” she said quietly.
Ethan picked up the contract. His tone was flat.
“It already was.”
A pause.
Then he added:
“Now it just belongs to me too.”
Ariana looked up sharply.
“What does that mean?”
But Ethan had already turned away.
Walking back to his desk.
“Take her to the car,” he said to no one in particular.
The door opened, secu
rity stepped in and Ariana froze.
“Wait..what about my sister?”
Ethan stopped.
Just slightly.
“Bring her,” he said without turning around.
And just like that, Ariana Benson’s life stopped being her own.
