He stares across the room, following the retreating figure. She floated into the room, and she escaped into another quickly making him wonder about her rush. The only conclusion he could present himself with is that fact it is a matter of love. Something he had been able to find once and was crushed after. Curiously he follows her, his footsteps silent across the bustling room until he reaches the open door she disappeared through.
A feminine laugh filters through his ears, along with her giggle. His gaze goes to a couple sat at a table, their gazes locked, souls intertwined and pheromones blazing. He observes from another table, his eyes stuck on the beauty that he followed. She leans slightly towards the woman across from her, her pupils partially obstructing sparkling blue of her irises. It is as if the woman across from her is her world and she couldn't notice him watching them, a look he had seen before.
The other woman looks away as someone enters the room. Her expression brightens making the first woman frown slightly in confusion and watches as a guy heads to their table. Words tumble from the second woman's smiling lips as the guy sits beside her, entwining their hands. All while the first woman's heart crumbles uselessly despite the smile on her lips.
At that moment, Death felt sadness for the first time, sad for his daughter, Hope.
Her blue eyes drift down to be reminded of their linked hands, so she looks at her soulmate's eyes hoping for her to see the pain. 'How did you guys meet?' Hope asks quietly. Her soulmate leans across the table and tucks stray blue hairs behind Hope's ear making her heart clench painfully despite the smile painting her face.
'At a party, last week,' the guy says, watching the woman beside him with a smile.
Hope smirks knowing that the bond will fade quickly as the party hyped up their feelings. 'That's nice.'
'It was the party you couldn't go to,' her soulmate adds, watching Hope's reaction.
Hope keeps their eyes locked, them ignoring the guy. 'That's a shame, sounded like a ball,' Hope replies.
'I wished you had come.'
'Why? You always complain that I'm never social at parties.'
'What would I be able to do without my best friend?'
'Apparently, you do well without me.' Hope tilts her head slightly making her hair fall over her shoulder.
'No, I don't.'
Before Hope can ponder the response, the leech speaks up. 'Seems like you got yourself an admirer,' the guy says.
Hope and her soulmate look round, their anger flaring. 'That's not an admirer. I've got things to do,' Hope says before moving from the table towards her father. 'What are you doing here?'
'Hope,' Death whispers.
'Don't!' Hope storms away from him making him follow.
He hurries after her figure, managing to pull her out of the crowd quickly because of her blue hair that compliments her eyes so well. 'Hope,' Death calls out making her stop and look back at him darkly.
'What makes you think you can follow me like this?' Hope responds.
'You left an ambiguous note, what else did you expect me to do?'
'Accept it? I'm twenty-three years old.'
Death opens and shuts his mouth. 'Fair point. But I was concerned.'
Hope notices the unspoken words in her dad's sentence. 'I know. Thank you, you seem like the only person who is.'
Death glances back at the table that Hope escaped from to see the guy sat alone confused. 'Who is that guy?'
'Name starts with K, I wasn't really listening. Besides, he isn't important.'
Death smiles softly at Hope. 'Ice-cream? I left Cee, Bee and Rus in the car.'
Hope smiles back and leans into his side as his arm wraps around her shoulder. 'Yeah, okay.' a laugh automatically escapes her lips at the sight of the three young dogs stumbling over each other in the backseat. 'I missed you guys.' her eyes go to her father to see him watching her.
'Like we missed you.'
Hope looks back at the restaurant to see her soulmate stood with her phone to her ear and a cigarette in her fingers. 'Let's go.'
