My departure was scheduled for a week later.
The next morning, I went to work as usual but broke the news to the hospital director. He was gutted and begged me to stay.
"Is it working, or is something else going on? We would be losing one of our best doctors, and it would hit the hospital hard."
My vision blurred with unshed tears, but I held firm.
I loved my profession and would continue practicing medicine, but I just needed to leave. The director had mentored me, and I feared that lingering would weaken my resolve, so I made some excuses and hurried away.
Before I could dwell on it, the door creaked open with a soft groan, and a familiar face appeared. Mia entered and peeled off her mask.
"Ms. Wells, I want you to do my surgery."
I fought to keep my face blank while my nails bit into my palms.
"Your husband opposed the procedure, Ms. Lane. Perhaps we should drop this."
She was just an innocent bystander, so there was no point in making waves. Besides, I would be gone soon anyway.
Mia clutched my hand desperately. "Please. You have seen how gorgeous he is. He adores me, but when he is turned on, he would rather suffer than risk hurting me. But I am terrified that some woman will seduce him eventually. We have been married a year, and he has never fully unleashed himself. Last month when I tried giving him everything, I tore slightly. After that, he popped pills for weeks to keep his hands off me."
Her words blurred into white noise as my mind reeled. Ethan had always been insatiable: the balcony, the couch, the kitchen—our home was a map of hungry memories.
But starting last year, he had vanished for weeks at a time, always with the excuse of working late or traveling for business.
Every return brought a frenzied reclaiming that left me gasping, and after his last two-week absence, I could not walk for three days. Yet today I heard another woman describe his supposed restraint and self-control.
"Ms. Wells! You are crying?" Mia stared at me in shock.
I quickly wiped my tears and plastered on a smile. "It just hit me emotionally. As a woman yourself, you get it, right? Please, do the surgery for me."
I clenched my fist and then reluctantly agreed. As a doctor, I could not refuse, and besides, the procedure was already booked.
Taking a deep breath, I locked my emotions away and focused entirely on the surgery. The procedure went smoothly and was a complete success.
"Get plenty of rest, avoid strenuous activity, and no s****l activity whatsoever," I told her as I removed my mask.
After she left, I returned to my duties.
Late that night, a sudden tug ripped me from sleep, and I crashed onto the floor.
My elbow smashed against the hardwood, and a sharp jolt of pain radiated up my arm as I hissed through my teeth. Blinking through the disorientation, I saw Ethan standing over me with his face like thunder.
"What the hell did you do to Mia?"
