The silence dragged on for so long that it began to feel unbearable. My fingers tightened around my purse. Richard still didn't move. The man had just dropped into my life like a storm, torn everything apart, and now he was standing there looking miserable while I was the one left trying to pick up the pieces. I took a shaky breath. "You know what?" My voice sounded rough from all the crying but Richard remained silent. I laughed bitterly. "All my life, people would ask me about my father."
