Be The Best Wife For You

Levious's POV I stepped back into the chamber with a handful of freshly fletched hunting arrows gripped in my right hand. Dropping the quiver heavily by the door, I walked inside, my eyes scanning the space for the woman who had officially become my wife. Unbuckling the heavy robe from my shoulders, I moved toward the bed, intending to finally collapse onto the mattress and let exhaustion take over. But before my weight could touch the sheets, a sharp contrast caught my eye. A stark, crimson stain marred the pristine white fabric. I leaned down, my right fingertips brushing against the dried bloodstain. A frown dug deep into my brow. Why did she seem so calm throughout our game? Suddenly, the muffled sound of running water echoed from behind the bathroom door, signaling that Agleria was still inside, washing away the remnants of my possession. I stood up, abandoning the idea of lying down on that bed. A strange, bitter taste settled in my mouth; I knew my presence right now would only make her uncomfortable after what I had put her through hours ago. A sudden wave of nausea hit my stomach, making me feel deeply unsettled. I grabbed the quiver of arrows by the door and walked out. My focus was shattered today, and my wolf's restless mood was telling me the exact same thing. I needed isolation, so I retraced my steps toward the King's private sanctuary hall—a restricted domain where even the royal guards dared not cross threshold without my explicit command. They knew their place, remaining like statues outside the heavy oak doors. “King Levious.” My eyes snapped open in one sharp motion. I hadn't even realized I had drifted off, sleeping upright in the high-backed chair from sheer physical exhaustion. “Forgive the intrusion, King Levious,” the guard's voice muffled through the door. “One of the pack elders has arrived and urgently requests an audience.” “Let him in,” I growled, rubbing the tension from my temples. “Your Majesty, King Levious. A formidable and powerful ruler, greetings to you.” The elder entered the moment the guard stepped back. The middle-aged man, sporting a thick white beard that swept down to his chest, bowed deeply in an display of calculated reverence. “Forgive me for disrupting your rest, King Levious. Word has spread across the palace that you went hunting wild game earlier today. Shouldn't you be accompanying Luna Agleria in the bridal chamber for the traditional nesting period?” A dark scoff slipped from my throat. It seemed my lifelong habit of tracking wild beasts alone in the mountains was something these parasites couldn't stand. They didn't want a hunter; they wanted a domesticated king chained to a desk and a palace bed. “I have already done my duty and bedded Agleria,” I replied flatly, leaning back against the cold leather. “What else do you expect me to do? Sit and stare at her all day?” “With all due respect, Your Majesty... it is the sacred etiquette of the Geeser Pack for a newly crowned king to remain secluded with his Luna for three full days. It is written in the ancient laws—” “I have told you repeatedly that I never wanted this accursed crown,” I interrupted, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper that made the elder stiffen. “Yet you old men kept pushing it onto my head.” “We beg for your mercy, King Levious...” Before he could finish his rehearsed apology, the heavy doors creaked open again. Another pack leader hurried into the room, immediately dropping to his knees before my chair. “Greetings, King Levious. I bear urgent news regarding your stepbrother. Elious is set to wed one of the Omegas from the Mevola Pack tomorrow morning. He formally requests your presence and that of Luna Agleria to stand as the official witnesses.” A twisted, humorless grin pulled at the corner of my lips. Elious—my brother from a different mother—was collecting wives like war trophies. “A seventh wife?” “Yes, King Levious. Now that his mother and King Sqear Geeser have passed, Elious wishes for the new supreme Alphas to bless his union.” I sat in silence for several long minutes, offering no expression, no answer. A deep disgust welled inside me. “Are you willing to grace the ceremony, King Levious?” the kneeling man asked, his eyes lowered. I let out a long, heavy sigh, the weight of the palace walls suffocating me. “Fine. I will inform Luna Agleria.” The first elder stepped forward again, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial tone. “The royal advisor also suggests, Your Majesty, that you consider taking another wife soon. To secure the bloodline, to ensure multiple pureblood descendants. They—” A violent, uncontrollable surge of nausea hit my throat. I gagged audibly, the harsh, retching sound slicing through the air and instantly freezing every man in the room into terrified silence. “Are you alright, King Levious?” the elder stammered, his face turning pale. I fought the sickness down with everything I had, my right fist clenching until my knuckles turned white. “Tell the royal advisor, I refuse the offer. Permanently.” “Y-yes, King Levious.” I bolted up from my chair, ignoring their bowing forms, and stormed out of the sanctuary. The four personal guards stationed at the corridor instantly fell into step behind me, shadowing my long, angry strides all the way back to the western wing. The moment I closed the bedroom door behind me, a soft, warm weight threw itself against my chest. “Levi,” Agleria whispered, her arms wrapping around my waist in a tight embrace. “Where have you been?” I immediately caught her by the shoulders, pushing her back just enough to create distance between us. I wasn't used to this kind of casual affection. It felt like a trap designed to soften my edges. My eyes swept the room, noting the immaculate state of the sheets, the fresh scent in the air, and the lack of bloodstains. “Who cleaned this room?” I demanded. Agleria offered a small, hopeful smile. “I did. I also washed our clothes and—” “Are you trying to win my favor, Agleria?” I cut her off, my voice cold and unyielding. “You can save your breath. Give up on whatever fantasy you're spinning, because I will never allow myself to be shackled by any woman.” The smile died on her lips. Her brow furrowed, a profound, fragile sadness washing over her delicate features. “Then... you want to remain alone for the rest of your life?” “Didn't I make myself clear yesterday? I want my old life back,” I snapped, turning my back to her. “I belong in the western mountains, hunting wild beasts, sleeping under the open sky. I cannot survive in this golden cage. So, do yourself a favor, Luna—start looking elsewhere. Seduce a Lycan King, an Alpha, or a Beta from another territory.” “I won't do that.” “You will have to. Because after our divorce, you will need to find—” “I don't want to divorce you!” Agleria shouted, her voice breaking as she boldly cut off my sentence. I spun back around to find her breathing unevenly, a thick veil of tears pooling in her wide, defiant eyes. I let out a soft, mocking snort. “You are incredibly stubborn, Luna. You truly think—” “What if I am already pregnant?” she challenged, her voice trembling but fierce. “What if I give birth to your son?” My lips curved into a sharp grin at her audacity. “Are you really that confident?” “Yes,” she whispered, stepping closer. “But on one condition... I want you to stay. Stay with me and our child longer.” “How long?” “Twenty years.” “No,” I replied instantly, crushing her hope without a second thought. “I won't survive twenty years locked in this palace with you. Becoming a doting father and a settled husband was never on my bucket list.” I watched the words hit her like a physical blow. I knew I was tearing her heart apart, but it was a necessary cruelty. I had to break her expectations before her feelings rooted too deeply into my cursed existence. “Am I not the beautiful princess of the Mevola Pack?” Agleria asked, her voice cracking as two hot tears finally spilled over her cheeks, reflecting the dim candlelight. “Kings from multiple territories fought to make me their Luna. So why... why are you so different?” I looked at her, refusing to answer. I knew the truth. My father, Sqear Geeser, had paid a fortune in pure gold and signed highly favorable treaties just to secure her hand because her beauty was legendary. I wasn't blind—I could admit my wife was breathtaking. But a pretty face couldn't cure the rot in my soul or make me love a forced crown. So, I chose silence, letting the tension stretch between us. “So... how long?” Agleria asked eventually, wiping her wet cheeks with the back of her hand, her posture stiffening with renewed defense. I stared at her with a calculated detachment, intentionally maintaining the emotional chasm between us so our souls wouldn't accidentally intertwine. “The deal remains seven years,” I stated coldly. “If you manage to give birth to a boy, I will remain here until his seventh birthday to train him. If not—if it is confirmed you are carrying a girl—I will leave exactly one year after the birth.” “Then who will take the crown if our baby is a girl?” “Elious, most likely. He is the eldest son of Sqear Geeser’s second wife; the lineage can default to him. Or Uncle Gozar. I don't care.” I turned to walk toward the bathroom, needing to wash the lingering scent of stress from my skin, but her hand suddenly caught my right arm. She didn't pull, just held on, her head bowed low. I stopped, waiting in the heavy silence until she found the courage to lift her face and look me in the eye. “Can we... can we do it one more time, Levi?” I froze, searching her face for any hidden agenda, utterly baffled by the erratic shifts in her mind. “I don't understand how your head works, Luna... but I will grant your request tonight. Get on the bed.” Agleria quietly climbed onto the mattress, shedding her garments until her pale skin was entirely bare against the sheets. She looked up at me with a gaze that defied definition—a haunting mix of profound sorrow and unyielding determination. “Levi...” she whispered softly into the quiet room, her eyes locked onto mine. “I will do my absolute best for you... as your wife.”
