Chapter 4 - Shadows and chips

When I woke up it was dawn. I couldn't see an inch farther than my hand. Stepping forward, I got my foot wet. I had probably found a river, so I decided to fill the bottle that I had in the backpack with as much water as I could. After drinking, I got back on track. At least today, luck was on my side given that I found also some edible fruits and vegetables.

I spent countless days and nights endlessly walking until I finally found a village. Reaching it, I noticed something similar to a hotel, therefore I knocked and asked if it could be possible to sleep there and get some clothes.

"Can you pay? If not, you're going to have to do some work for us."

"It's fine with me" I answered.

Living there, I got to know how life was for the people there. I had to find a job because money is necessary for a good life. I even gave birth to my baby. It was a boy, but I wasn't ready to give him a name. After a year, I was friendly with everyone at the village and everybody knew about me. Many people asked me about where was I from, but I never gave a truthful answer. While I was heading back to the hotel with some food, a woman approached me leaving a piece of folded paper in my hand. That night, in my bedroom, I checked on the paper.

'If you want to see what the world has to offer, I have a job for you. You'll have to catch wanted people. The pay is high, the more you catch, the more you get payed. If you are interested, meet me at dawn tomorrow morning in front of the last house at north.'

I was curious and thrilled about this change of plans. I was living there for a lot of time, so my decision was to accept this job.

"You came" she murmured when I arrived.

"I want to leave this place. I'll accept the job"

"First and foremost, I have questions.

Can you fight well? Do you have enough money right now? How old are you? Can you use magic? Do you have any secret weapon? Can you manage your child?"

I was a bit confused by the rush of questions, but I managed to answer to each of them without the need to repeat them.

"Yes, yes, 21 (I decided to lie a bit just to be sure), no, it depends on what you mean, yes "

"Ok, then I think you'll be fine. Did you get everything from the hotel?"

"Yes"

"Then, let's go. We have a long way to go"

We walked on the snow, while it was raining or thundering. We always maintained our pace, and my little boy didn't wail not even once. I kept him safe in a shoulder baby bag on my breast. When we arrived, it must have been at least a month later. The place was gorgeous and gigantic. It shined brightly with all the people and the animals walking around. I follow Fiona, that's her name, in a kind of hotel that she knew. We entered.

"Hi John, how's life? I got her from one of villages. She wants to apply for the job."

"She has a kid. Are you sure, lady?"

"Yes, I'm sure I will manage both the job and the kid well"

"Nice then. I need your informations. You know, name, age and so on"

"Sure. I'm Rose Black, I'm 21 years old, I can fight but I can't use magic. I have a kid."

"Ok. perfect, you're signed up for this. To be paid, you must follow the instructions for each catch. Don't worry, they'll be given to you with the target. Your rooms are upstairs, just follow Fiona."

"Thanks a lot" I whispered before following her.

The room was gorgeous, and there was already my name on the front door. It remembered me of my room at the castle. I felt a bit nostalgic. However, this job will be a really good connection. I will make money and it will probably help me find my people.

'I have to think about his name. Which should it be. Something like Alexander or Hugo. No, I don't like those. A name of my own, something that I like. Trevor, no his face doesn't look like a Trevor. August, yeah maybe that's the one.'

"What about August?" I asked him

"Is that supposed to be an angry face? Don't you like it? Then, what about Felix?"

"You smiled, you like this, then it's decided" I said happy.

"Rose, we can rest for a bit, then we have to get changed and we'll go together for the first catches, okay?" she shouted behind the door

"Yes, got that Fiona. Thank you"

Therefore, first I got changed in a more suitable suit for fighting, then I laid down on the bed beside Felix. He must be happy now that's not trapped anymore in that bag. I fell asleep almost immediately.

"Rose, wake up! Rose!" I heard Fiona shouting again

"I'm up, I'm up" I answered as fast as I awaked

"Come outside if you're ready, we have to get going" she shouted a bit annoyed

"Sure, I'm coming" I responded taking my bag with me and putting inside it Felix

"Now mom has to work, you have to be quiet Felix until I have finished, okay?"

"Mmh" was the only answer that I got. He had already learned how to walk, however he never said anything before.

"Let's go"
