Chapter 4

The black limousine glided silently along the winding road, the last rays of the setting sun casting a warm, golden hue across the horizon. Inside the vehicle, Liam sat in quiet thoughts, still battling with his confusion. The grandeur of the estate he was being driven to was almost too much to grasp. Douglass, with his typical calm demeanor, sat across from him, his gaze steady as he observed Liam’s reaction. “Mr. Liam, I want to assure you that this will be your home for the foreseeable future,” His voice was smooth and reassuring. “The estate is not only a symbol of your family’s wealth but also a sanctuary where you can begin to understand and embrace your new role.” The limousine turned into a grand driveway, lined with tall, ancient trees that created a canopy of dappled light. As they closed in on the mansion, Liam's eyes widened in disbelief. The estate was a masterpiece of classical architecture, with its towering columns, intricate stonework, and expansive lawn that seemed to stretch endlessly into the twilight. Douglass guided Liam out of the car and led him up the grand steps to the massive wooden doors, which creaked open to reveal the opulence inside. “This is the main entrance,” Douglass explained, ushering Liam into a vast foyer. The marble floors gleamed under the chandeliers, and the rich aroma of polished wood and fresh flowers filled the air. “Here, you’ll find the formal dining room and the library. Each room has been prepared for your arrival.” As they toured the estate, Liam marveled at the lavishness of each room. The living areas were adorned with luxurious furnishings—velvet drapes, mahogany tables, and ornate rugs. His footsteps echoed softly in the high-ceilinged rooms, each turn revealing more of the grandeur he was now a part of. The weight of his newfound status pressed heavily upon him, and he struggled to adjust to the sheer scale of it all. Douglass led him to a more private part of the mansion a spacious study with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gardens. “This will be your personal office,” Douglass said, gesturing to the room. “It’s equipped with all the necessary amenities for managing your affairs. However, there is more to discuss.” Liam turned to Douglass, his expression a mixture of curiosity and apprehension. “This is so great to be candid.” Then he paused to inhale before he asked. “What comes next?” Douglass’s gaze was steady. “Good question.” He blurted. “Tomorrow, we will hold a press conference to introduce you as the new CEO of Astor Enterprises. It is the third largest company in the city, and it will be your responsibility to oversee its operations and ensure its continued success.” The name struck Liam like a thunderbolt. “Astor what? I had no idea…” Douglass cut him off gently. “Yes, Mr. Liam. Your family’s wealth is vast and multifaceted. As the new CEO, you will need to familiarize yourself with the company’s various holdings and operations. This will require both time and dedication.” Liam’s mind raced. “I’ve never managed anything of this scale. How am I supposed to” Douglass raised a hand yet again, his tone soothing. “It is important to lay low initially. The press conference will draw significant attention, and while this will introduce you to the public, it will also attract potential adversaries. It is wise to proceed with caution. We will handle any immediate challenges.” The enormity of the situation began to settle in, and Liam felt the weight of responsibility pressing down on him. “And what about Vivian?” he asked, his voice tinged with uncertainty. Douglass’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Vivian is a part of your past now. Her actions have caused significant upheaval, but your focus should be on establishing yourself in this new role. We will address any issues that arise in due course.” Meanwhile days later at another side of town, Vivian was basking in the afterglow of her latest triumph. She had since moved from her old house with Liam. Her elegant sitting room was filled with laughter and clinking glasses as she and her friends recounted the scandal she had orchestrated. The room was stylishly decorated, with plush sofas and contemporary art adorning the walls. “Oh my God, you should have seen his face” Vivian said, her voice full of glee. “The look on Liam’s face when he realized he this meat was far beyond his reach….priceless!” Her friends erupted into laughter, the sound ringing through the room. “Seriously, Vivian, you’ve set the bar for how to deal with these low-life types,” Emma chimed in. “I can’t believe he thought he could just waltz into a high-society event and not face any consequences!” Vivian’s laughter was rich and genuine as she sipped her drink. “Well, he underestimated me. It’s almost too easy sometimes. Men like him think they can come in and disrupt our world without facing repercussions.” As Vivian got up to fetch another drink, Lisa got up and wandered over to the television. “Hey, isn’t that the press conference for the new Astor Enterprise CEO?” she asked, her tone casual as she flipped through the channels. Vivian barely glanced up from the kitchen, her mind still swirling with triumph. “Yeah, whatever. It’s probably just another boring corporate event.” Lisa’s eyes widened as the channel settled on a live broadcast. “Vivian, come here!” she shouted, her voice filled with excitement. Vivian hurried back into the room, her eyes locking onto the screen. The camera panned over a grand estate, and the reporter’s voice filled the room, announcing, “And now, a special introduction to the new CEO of Astor Enterprises. After a period of uncertainty, the company is poised to welcome its new leader.” Vivian’s heart skipped a beat as the camera focused on Liam, now standing alongside Douglass. Her jaw dropped in disbelief. “What...?” she muttered, her voice barely audible. One of her friends, completely unaware of the unfolding drama, called out, “Vivian, isn’t that your ex-husband?” The glass Vivian had been holding slipped from her fingers, shattering on the floor. She stumbled backward, her eyes fixed on the screen, unable to comprehend what she was seeing. Liam’s face, now confident and commanding, was broadcasted across the screen. The reality of the situation hit her like a freight train. Her triumphant smirk turned to shock as she whispered, “What?”
