You should ascend the throne

All thanks to Ariana, my first day at school was a horrible experience. She's like a monitoring spirit, following me around. She appears from nowhere even when I'm trying to get away from her. It's finally closing time, and I drive out of the school compound and straight to the penthouse. I've had a tiring day, and the only thing on my mind now is to go home and relax my head. The drive home isn't much stressful, as the school is not so far from my place. "It's a good thing you're finally here, my prince. I've been trying to reach your phone for hours now, but nothing seems to be working," Giselle looks worried as soon as I step into the living room, and I become curious. "What's going on?" I question confusingly, seeing the worried look on her face. I've been with her for years and I've never seen her like this before. Seeing that expression on her face gives me the impression that all is not well. "It's the alpha. I got a call that he is sick and is presently under the care of a physician. Your mother sounded serious over the phone, so I guess the sickness is kind of serious," She explains, and my eyes widen. This is unusual, I've never heard my dad complain of anything since I was born, he had never fallen sick, not even for once. I don't know if he falls sick when I was a kid, but as far as I've come to know, he had never complained of any sickness. "Take this to my room," I drop my backpack on the couch and rush out of the house. I drive out of the compound and straight to the castle. The drive to the castle takes much time since it's far from the penthouse. "Mother, how's he?" I ask worriedly, hurrying into my father's chambers. I stop abruptly as I spot him lying on his bed with his eyes closed. He looks pale as if he had been sick for a while. "Roan, you're here?" Mom smile at me, but I can always tell the tiniest secret behind her smile, and from the look on her face, I know she's not fine, but she's just pretending to be. How do I expect her to be fine when her husband is not even fine? "I'm sorry I had to come late. What did the physician say?" I ask, taking a seat beside dad on the bed. She sighs deeply, which means that there'll be a problem. "It's fine, son. Giselle told me you went to school, so I understand," She force a smile. "Why not get some rest, mother? I'll look after him," She shook her head in refusal to what I said. I give up trying to convince her, knowing that she'd rather stay by her husband's side than go to her room and rest. "The physician said that the poison is still spreading in his body. He had tried to get it all from his blood, but it didn't work," She say sadly. I don't know a good man like my father did, to deserve the cruelty of being poisoned. He had lived with the poison in his blood for over ten years now, and all efforts to cure him have proven abortive. We have tried to find the person that did something like that to him, but even after so many years, we still haven't gotten him until now. "You don't have to be sad, mother. Father will be fine," I assure her, and she nods sadly. An awkward silence assumes the room, and I bet she has something going on in her mind, judging from the expression on her face. "Roan..." She calls softly, taking my hands, and even if she hasn't talked yet, I know she has something under her sleeve. "I'm sorry that I'm asking you this, but you see at this point, we don't have a choice. I know what I'm about to ask you to do is difficult, but you have to do this because of your father. He needs you now the most, and you have to be at his service..." She speaks softly and indirectly. "What's it, mother?" I ask, trying to get the words off her mouth. She's getting me curious with her beating around the bush and not telling me what I need to hear. "You see, the throne can't be left empty now that your father is sick, so you have to take up the throne for now, until your father regains back his strength," She finally finish her statement, and I retract my hands from her grasp, shaking my head. How can she even ask me to do such a thing? "I can't, mother. You know that I don't want to have anything to do with the throne. That's one of the reasons I left the castle in the first place, just so I could live a simple life. You can't possibly ask me to become the acting alpha in the place of father when he has a beta. That's why he has a beta, you can tell him to take up the throne now until father is fine. I'm sure he can handle the throne better than myself," I suggest, and she smiles. "You won't understand, son. We can't let your father's beta take up the throne when he has you and you're old enough to do this. Is this too difficult to do for your father? I don't trust beta Ryder, and I can't let him take up the throne," I scoff at her words. I know my mother has trust issues, but doubting my father's beta, who has served my father even before I was born and have been loyal to him, is what she shouldn't even think of, right? I don't think the man can betray us. "This is just a little favor I'm asking from you, is it too difficult to do? Not that your father is going to take forever to recover. Why can't you do this for her?" She asks sadly, and I sigh. "But I have to go to school, mother," I further say. "You can still do that, son," She persists, and I know there's no way I can escape this position she's asking me to uphold. How on earth does she expect me to sit on the throne when I don't even have what it takes to do it? "I know what you're thinking, you shouldn't be thinking of that now," She persists, and I nod in agreement. Not that I can say no though...
