You're a weakling

Roan POV I still can't believe that my parents are dead. It has been two weeks since their demise, but it's still like a dream to me. I've been wallowing in pain and crying my eyes out as if it's going to bring them back. If tears can revive the dead, then I'm sure my parents must've come back to life already. I stand in the garden, staring into space as old memories play freshly in my head. They were the best family I ever had, and because of them, I was happy, but it seems like nothing is left for me in this world, I feel like no hope of living is left for me. Thinking about the memories we shared, the scar in my heart reopens and hurts deeply. I don't think I'll ever be able to get rid of this pain. The footsteps drawing close from behind me pull my attention and even though I don't look back, I can already tell who it is, judging from the scent. It's lord Erik. "My lord," His voice confirms his identity, and I sigh deeply, turning around to face him. The look on his face depicts worries and I know something must be going on, that I need to know about. After the demise of my parents, the members of the council have been acting weird, which calls for alarm, but having anything else disturb me at this critical moment of my life, is the last thing on my mind now. "Lord Erik," I call softly, giving him the look that asks him to go ahead because he must have something to say. "We need to talk," His worried voice echoes in my ear and I pull a puzzled look, wondering what could've been wrong that would make him sound so urgent and serious. "Go ahead," An awkward silence assumes the air, as I wait patiently for him to say what he has come to say. "What's going on, my lord?" He asks with all seriousness resounding in his voice, and I stare at him blankly. I do not understand what he means by that question. "I don't understand, lord Erik," I drawl, to confirm my confusion and curiosity. For the next few minutes, he remain silent and at this time, I become worried and more curious about what was happening. "We should meet in the throne room, my lord," He bows slightly and with that, he turns around and walks away while I just stare at his receding shadow confusingly. What could be the problem? Could it be that the culprit has been found and it turns out to be someone close to the pack? I can't help having so many thoughts running through my mind. But I won't know if I don't go to the meeting, right? A few minutes later, I head to the throne room. Everybody is already waiting for me, including beta Ryder. He has a look on his face that explains nothing. Seeing the blank look on their faces explains everything I need to know. Even if I'm clueless about what's going on, I know that there's a problem. I walk over to the throne and make myself comfortable. Since the death of my father, I've only been here once, and that was the last two weeks that they were buried. The final rite was carried out right in the throne room before their corpses were sent to the ancestral tomb, where they were finally burnt and the ashes were brought back to the castle. After that day, I've either been in my room or the garden. "Greetings, my lord," Lord Erik and others greets me while bowing slightly. "Why do you call me here?" I ask curiously and they all glance at each other, except beta Ryder who stares into space with a straight face. "My lord, we demand an explanation for what happened weeks ago," Lord Leo spits out, anger resounding in his voice. "What are you talking about?" I ask confusingly. "Enough of the pretense, my lord! With all due respect, you are not capable of protecting us," Lord Luther, one of the chiefs spits out, and my eyes slowly narrow as realization dawn on me. Now I understand what they're talking about. This has something to do with what happened weeks ago. "Luther!" Lord Erik scolds lord Luther, but the old man looks unbothered. "For how long do we have to keep up with this? For how long do we have to pretend like nothing happened, when a lot is happening? For how long do we have to live under the shadow of a leader, who can't even protect his people?" Lord Luther scoffs with pure disgust in his voice and I clench my fists as waves of guilt spur through me. They're right, I don't deserve to be a leader. I can't even protect them. "Enough, Luther!" Lord Erik yells. "So what? Am I not saying the truth? For how long do you want to keep doing this? Pretending like nothing happened and making him feel good about himself, for how long do you plan to do this? He stood there like a log of wood, our people were murdered in cold blood, and he couldn't even do anything. Our alpha and Luna were killed before him and all he did was stand there like the weakling he is, crying his eyes out as if it would help. What more can he do if not cry? We need someone that can protect us, someone that we can call our leader and not a human!" Lord Leo spits out with anger written all over him. "As if that was not enough, for two weeks you've been here, doing nothing about what happened. Are you planning to let those traitors go unpunished? You haven't even made any attempt of getting them. Even if you don't care about the lives that were lost, how about that of your parents? You're going to fold your arms and watch other packs insult us? This has never happened in history, and I'm highly disappointed that it's happening now. They must be feeling that we've lost out potency now and that they can do anything and go unpunished," Lord Rodriguez chips in. "Lord Erik may be hiding this from you, but I want to tell you this today. You're not accepted to be our leader. You must prove to us that you're capable of handling the throne, and if you cannot do that, then I'm sorry. But we can't allow a human to rule us, prove to us that you're one of us, and not those weak creatures called humans. Until then, I'm done here," Lord Luther growls and with that, he storms out of the throne room, while I sit on the throne watching them with tears in my eyes...
