Betrothed

The awkward silence is killing me already, and it seems like my parents are not ready to talk. They're both sitting on my bed, while I sit on the dresser and waiting for them to talk. I'm getting impatient already. "Is this how you two are going to keep staring without saying anything? I'm getting curious and disturbed about this, mother, father. Please talk to me and stop keeping me in the dark," I ruffle my hair as if I'm going crazy. Yes, I'm losing my mind already, and they better do something before I lose it completely. They both glance at each other, as if giving themselves signals as to who'll do the talking. "You're betrothed to alpha Dean," Father says those words without remorse and I feel a heavy bang in my head. My eyes slowly narrow and I suddenly feel a chill sensation over my body, as though adrenaline stopped pumping. His words ring in my head like a million times and for some minutes, I sit watching them like a zombie. "I...I don't understand," I scoff confusingly, asking for more explanation. His words are quite uncleared, and I need clarification. "One hundred years ago, my late father had an agreement with alpha Dean. They both agreed that if my father gave birth to a female child, she would be married off to alpha Dean, but unfortunately, my father had a male child. The friendship between me and alpha Dean has been in existence from the day I was born. While I was growing up, I learned about the agreement the two had before I was born. My father was a man of his word, and he wanted to make it up to alpha Dean. He made me promise him that I would give my female child to alpha Dean, if I ever have one, and I had no option than to give my father my words..." Father stops to observe my reaction, but I'm just too dumb at the moment to give any reaction. "When we had Alex, I saw the disappointment in alpha Dean's eyes. For the years that we've been friends, I saw him sad for the first time. Over the years, my friendship with him grew stronger. Years after your mother gave birth to Alex, she got pregnant again, and this time, she had you. While your mother was pregnant, the priest told me that you were destined to be alpha Dean's mate..." His words echo in my head and I let out a scoff. He must be joking around and even if he's being serious, then I'm sure he mustn't be talking about my own Ariana. "When your mother gave birth to you, alpha Dean claimed you as his and we made a promise that he would take you away when you're twenty-four years old. He was happy when we had you, he was always there by your side and watched you grow. Because of you, he had remained single for over a thousand years. He was waiting for you..." "He will wait forever until he dies, father," I cut him off, springing up to my feet. "What do you think you're saying? Because you said all these, I should feel touched or what? I don't understand. How could you even go to the extreme length of doing that, father? Your father had his life to live, you have your own life to live, and the same here with me. What right do you have, to make decisions for me even before I was born? What right do you have to choose a spouse for me, without even thinking of how I'd feel when I grow up? Do you care about me at all?" Tears slid down my cheeks as I speak out my painful heart. The pain I'm feeling in my heart now is nothing compared to a heart that has a dagger thrust into it. Father has hurt me beyond words, but there's no way I'll agree to his decisions. "Ari!" Father calls sternly, and I scoff. "What more can you do? You already did the worst thing by getting me engaged with someone without my consent, so what else can you possibly do that'd be more painful than this? Now listen to me, father. I don't care who that man is, I don't care about the years of relationship you both had and I do not care about what will happen in the future, but I want you to tell him to never in his life, bother me about anything. I don't care about the deal you both had, but as far as I am concerned, I am still single and not betrothed to anybody," I storm out of the room in tears, ignoring my mother who keeps calling me. I never imagined my father could do this to me, but he had done it though. People are always full of surprises, and he just surprised me. I run out of the house and straight to the garden. I fall to my knees and cry my eyes out. I can't imagine myself being with someone like that, he's a beast, and even if he's nice, how the heck am I supposed to marry someone that has lived over a thousand years? How's that even possible? I already have someone I love, and even if I don't, there's no way I'll ever have anything to do with that man. Not now and not ever. "Ari..." I hear my mother's voice and I stand up to my feet before turning to face her. She has tears in her eyes, she looks like she wants to help me but she's handicapped. "Mother... Did you know about this?" I ask, praying that she tells me that everything was planned behind her back. Knowing that she knew about this and couldn't protect me, will break my heart the more. "What could I have done, my child? For someone that respects her husband, his wish will always be your command. I don't expect you to understand now, but with time you'll get to understand," She tries to fight back her tears as she looks at me with a forced smile dancing on her lips. She's right. As far as I have known, she respects her husband more than anyone else, and she would always does whatever he asks her to do, no matter how difficult it seems to be. "Am I really going to marry him?" I break into tears, hugging her tightly...
