Title: Shadows of the Forgotten

705 Words
** Ethan and Cole had been partners for years, ever since they joined the agency. Their missions were always high-risk, deep behind enemy lines, but this one was different. This time, they weren’t just sent to stop a threat—they were sent to uncover a secret buried in the ruins of a war-torn city. The mission was simple on paper: infiltrate an abandoned military complex, recover a stolen weapon prototype, and extract. But they both knew the complexity that lay beneath. The complex was in the heart of hostile territory, a place long abandoned but whispered to still hold remnants of old, twisted experiments. They arrived at dusk, the once-great city now nothing but a crumbled wasteland. Shadows stretched across the streets, and the silence was oppressive. Ethan checked his equipment, his breath steady as always. He was the calm one, the planner, the one who could analyze a situation in seconds and find a way through. Cole, on the other hand, was instinct. His gut guided him, and it had saved their lives more than once. They slipped through the ruins, moving as one. The entrance to the complex was hidden beneath layers of rubble, but their intel was good. They found the door, rusty and worn, and forced it open with a groan that echoed down the empty streets. Inside, the air was stale and thick with the scent of decay. Their flashlights cut through the darkness, revealing abandoned labs and shattered equipment. Old papers, once classified, littered the floor like leaves from a forgotten autumn. The deeper they went, the more unsettling the place became. “This feels off,” Cole whispered, his eyes scanning every shadow. “Stay sharp,” Ethan replied, though he felt the same unease creeping into his chest. As they reached the lower levels, they found a lab, untouched by time. On a table in the center of the room sat a metal case—the prototype. But something was wrong. It was too easy, too untouched. “Trap?” Cole muttered. “Most likely,” Ethan said. “But we don’t have a choice.” Cole moved forward cautiously, his eyes never leaving the corners of the room. He reached for the case when suddenly, the lights flickered and died. The room plunged into darkness. Then came the sound—a low, guttural growl, followed by the scrape of something moving in the dark. Ethan’s heart pounded. “Move!” Cole grabbed the case, and they bolted for the door, their flashlights flickering erratically. Behind them, something enormous crashed through the lab, metal clanging and glass shattering. Whatever it was, it was fast. Too fast. They ran through the maze of hallways, the growls growing louder, closer. Ethan glanced over his shoulder, catching only glimpses of the thing—a hulking figure, too twisted to be human, moving in the shadows. “Get to the surface!” Ethan shouted as they sprinted toward the exit. But the creature was gaining on them. Just as they reached the final door, it lunged. Ethan felt a sharp pain in his leg as its claws raked across him, pulling him down. “Ethan!” Cole turned back, pulling his sidearm, but the thing was too fast. Ethan shouted at him to run, but Cole hesitated, unwilling to leave his partner behind. With a final burst of strength, Ethan kicked the creature off, buying just enough time to scramble through the door. Cole slammed it shut, panting, as the thing crashed against it with deafening force. For a moment, they just stood there, gasping for breath. The silence after the chaos was unbearable. “We’re not alone,” Ethan whispered, clutching his wounded leg. “Whatever they were working on… it’s still here.” Cole nodded, his jaw clenched. “Let’s finish this.” They limped out of the complex into the night, the stolen prototype in hand, but they both knew the mission wasn’t over. Whatever was down there, lurking in the shadows, wouldn’t stop hunting them. And as they disappeared into the night, the growls echoed in the distance—reminding them that some missions leave more questions than answers, and not every secret should be uncovered.
