Chapter 18

He glanced down and saw the necklace dangling between her perfect breasts, the new chain glittering on her warm skin. And that one small glimpse was enough to make his c**k harden mercilessly, and his breath catch. He reached out slowly, not wanting to scare her, and touched the chain. “You’re wearing it.” “Yes.” She looked up at him. Their eyes met and held. Sarah felt a tightening in her p***y, a fluttering that she’d never felt before. Good God, he was just so… male. So huge and hot, and she just wanted him to wrap those arms around her. She knew they’d feel wonderful. Oh, no. You’ve got it bad, girl. **** Two hours and two Cosmopolitans later, Mac, King and Aidan approached the table. Jax saw them coming, and shot them a quizzical look. “Sarah?” King said. “Can we talk to you about something?” Jax suddenly knew what it was about, and he closed his eyes briefly. He’d have preferred to put this conversation off until another time, but he knew King. The man wanted to take care of this business, and the sooner the better. She looked up at the men. “Uh. Sure.” They sat and Jax moved closer to Sarah. She was pressed right up against his body now, but she didn’t seem to mind, he was happy to notice. He rested his arm on the booth seat behind her, feeling like he almost had it around her shoulders. “We want to go and pay Dave a visit,” King said. Jax sighed. King was a man of very few words, and he was fond of getting right to the point, but Jax thought that maybe he could have introduced the whole topic a bit more tactfully. Sarah looked across the table at King, totally confused. “Dave Townsend? My ex?” “That’s the fucker,” King said. “Where is he?” “OK, wait… I’m sorry. I don’t understand.” She shook her head. “Are you saying that you’re going to… beat him up?” “For starters.” She looked around the table. “All of you?” They nodded. She looked shocked. “Listen, doll.” Jax’s voice was gentle. “We look like hard asses, I know, and in some ways, I guess we are. But the fact is, we can’t just stand by and watch a woman get beat on. Dave hurt you – bad. We want to make sure he understands that it’s not OK to treat women like that.” She was quiet. “Red?” Mac said. “Are we scaring you? You need to know that we’d never lay a finger on anyone who didn’t deserve it.” “Yeah, I know,” she said. “I’m not scared of any of you.” “OK,” Aidan said, relieved. “So where is the dickhead?” She sighed. “He’s gone.” “Where?” Jax said. “Back to New York. He’s from there, and according to Richard and Ellen, Dave took off back home within hours of beating me up. Dave told Rich that he was sure he’d have an angry biker looking to kick his ass.” She smiled shakily. “Turns out, he was right, huh?” “So, his family knows what happened?” Mac said. “Oh, for sure.” Sarah twisted her fingers. “I – I heard from the family lawyer on Monday afternoon.” “You what?” Jax sat at attention; the other men did too “Yeah. I'd told Ellen and Rich that I was going to go to the cops and report the assault, and Rich told Dave's parents right away. This lawyer on Monday said that Dave’s father had asked him to call me… said that if I caused any trouble at all for Dave, they’d bury me and any lawyer I found in paperwork, and depositions, and God-only-knows-what.” “f*****g frat boys and their Daddies,” King said. “So, his father’s protecting him? After he beat up a woman?” She nodded. “They – they offered me a payout to shut up and go away.” “How much?” Aidan asked. “I have no idea. I told him to f**k off and hung up on him.” They stared at her, knowing how much she could have used that money. “Yeah?” King said. “Yeah.” She drank the last of her Cosmopolitan, set down the empty glass. “But doesn’t he have to come back at some point?” Mac said. “I mean, he’s at college here, right?” “Yes. But according to Ellen, Mr. Townsend’s private physician has written an official medical certificate, claiming that Dave has some serious health issues. The college has agreed to let him take as much time off as he needs.” “f*****g hell,” King growled. “Rich boys and their rich families, huh?” Sarah shrugged. “Will you let us know when he comes back?” Mac said. “Well,” she said. “It may be a long while, you know.” “We can wait,” Jax said. “That’s not a problem.” She looked up at them now, met their eyes. They were gazing back at her, warm and gentle, and despite herself, she smiled. “I’ll think about it.” “Good enough.” Aidan got to his feet. “How about one more drink?”
